The Haunting of Taunton State Hospital in Taunton, Massachusetts - listverse.com/2013/06/21/10-horrifying-hospitals-you-havent-heard-of/ - 2 Views
Located in Taunton, Massachusetts, Taunton State Hospital was built in 1854 as a psychiatric hospital, and it boasts a rather horrifying history. One of the hospital’s most famous patients was Jane Toppan, a serial killer who confessed to having murdered at least 31 people while working as a nurse. And yet, according to some of the stories, the people who ran Taunton State Hospital may have actually been even more terrifying than many of the criminally insane patients it housed.Rumors persist that some of the doctors and nurses would take the (obviously unwilling) patients into the basement and use them to conduct satanic rituals, and in its later years both patients and doctors reported feeling a tremendous sense of unease when even approaching the door to the basement. Reports abound of a “shadow man” who would crawl on the walls and watch the patients. At least you wouldn’t feel lonely, right?

Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts - www.lizzie-borden.com/ - 2 Views
Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41. Shortly before noon on August 4, 1892, the body of Andrew Borden, a prosperous businessman, was found in the parlor of his Fall River, Massachusetts, home. As neighbors, police and doctors arrived at the scene, the body of Abby Borden, his wife, was discovered in an upstairs bedroom. A week later, Andrew’s younger daughter, Lizzie, was arrested for the double murder. In an era when women were considered the “weaker” sex and female murderers were nearly unheard of, the trial—and subsequent acquittal—of Lizzie Borden made her a media sensation. Officially, the case remains unsolved, but Lizzie Borden may very well have taken an ax and ended her parents’ lives on that sweltering summer day.

Old Yarmouth Inn & Tavern in Yarmouth, Massachusetts - oldyarmouthinn.com/ - 1 Views
The Old Yarmouth Inn, established in 1696, lays claim as the oldest inn on Cape Cod. Situated at the halfway point on the long day and a half journey from Plymouth to Provincetown, it became a welcome haven for the weary traveler in need of lodging, food and drink. In early colonial times it was very common to build taverns close to churches. After long hours in unheated churches parishioners would gather in front of a warm fire and enjoy refreshments provided by the innkeeper. During the Revolutionary War, inns often served many purposes for the townsfolk: newsrooms for the colonists, barracks for the soldiers and sometimes even as hospitals. Because of a fire at the Town Hall where most important documents were kept, few papers survive to outline the Inn’s true history, but the Inn’s guest registry from the 1860?s survives as testimony to the hundreds of travelers that have come before. The Old Yarmouth Inn continues to serve as a respite for weary travelers, as a gathering place for local townspeople and as a favorite dining spot on Cape Cod for friends and families.
