Does anyone use cameras and a "back office" to control props or effects?
What are peoples emergency plans for an accident or health emergency?

We use cameras to watch our patrons not to trigger effects with though. We use sensors and eyes so when people break the beam they activate. Not saying you couldn't use a central type system it would require a good bit of wiring/remote switches. Our emergency plan consists of using radios and a central center to which we have a system in palce to use when emergencies happen. We also have gotten with the local fire department and developed an evacuation plan and a meeting place in case of a fire. Hope this helps.

Say something happens in the center of the haunt, do you have hidden doors to get EMS in?

When trying to build the place or repair things too.
Who doesn't trully appreciate a quick short cut through a maze when carrying a step ladder?
Planning ahead saves all kinds of problems from manifesting themselves. So, you spend a few bucks on hinges.

Almost all the Haunts I have been at have some alternate access points. this is how many of the actors move with in the haunt with ouy being seen and as jim said it is a pain to carry a big ladder through a maze when you can cut straight through it. We have a bunch of off duty EMT and police whome work with in the haunt. But it is always good to have an emergency plan on what to do.

We have thought out and planned for a 4 foot hallway that goes around most of the haunt that lead to the exit doors outside, aswell as let our actors enter from any location that enables them to scare you then get ahead of you and scare again. Most of our exits go right into this hallway. I hope some of this helps out just a little and I hope i mae some sense.

Our fire inspector is actually who required that we build the exit parameter. At first, I thought that it was going to be a pain. In the end - it makes amazing sense and works well for getting around the attraction!

From what I've been able to determine ( at least with Ken Donat at Westland) the insurance companies them selves, dont REQUIRE the "extra perimiter" the duliding inspoectrs also dont "require" it .. but they are happy that is is there.
Emergency exits ( at least in NYS) should be within either some many TRAVELING FEET from each other OR so many feet from one point to the next. Same thing with fire extinguishers , unless your haunt has a sprinker system.
We had it planned for evrey 5 - 10 wall panels around the perimiter of the haunt had a "exit" wether for emergenciers or " chicken exits". And the building inspoector was fine with that. He even say there were MORE than what was needed.
We also had it planned that each room woudl have a "fast door" for the actors or other crew members to get from point to point easily, it DOES MAKE A HUGE DIFFRENCE.
The "fast doors" were NOT going to be labled and would have been made part of the "room decor" .
For us here in NYS , the exits HAD to be labled as such and or lighted in SOME WAY, we COULD NOT use the "reflective signs" which actually put us OVER BUDGET as well as other issues, for our commercial haunt for this year :( .
Granted, yes the Fire and saftey codes are FEDERAL.. and used as a guide line, but each community can "tweak" them how they see fit and many communities do so. Granred its not the "right" thing to do but it happens.
It does help to get to be on good terms with the building inspector and or the fire marshal. They will have the final say as to what you can and can't do, and approve or disapprove your plans. And always keep them updated as to ANY changes to your plans.
Just some extra thoughts to throw out there.

We have 32 cameras and use them to trigger some props that needs to be at the right time for the group and I have 8 emergency exits around the building.

Like most haunts, we have the hallway that outlines the perimeter of our attraction as well as doors throughout the middle of the haunt which double as actor doors/emergency doors. We also have 4 control booths that act as an area for operators to trigger lights and effects. We have cameras in the first few rooms for that control booth operator #1 watches. These booths are rather effective. As for Security and Fire Department staff, do don't have any on site because the fire department as well as the police department are right across the street from us. Convenience at it's best.

We just set up out control booth.
It consists of a camera system and a control board, each camera corresponds to a button on the board, so when people are in the exact right spot you can trigger the effects.
SAFETY is a big reason why we do this, we have a train horn, and 5 120psi 5 gallon air cannon, none of which can fire if a group has very small children. ALSO you always run the risk of someone falling, tripping the sensor and taking an air cannon to the face. If you run cameras you will spend much more money, but you have complete control over your haunt. Next year we will be upgrading our system so that we can see patron on every square inch of our haunt, and those cameras will be run by a group with walkie talkies to tell actors where guests are at all times.
make sure you get a good NIGHT VISION set!
the ones that we have are good for up to 50 feet in the dark, but when you add fog your lucky if you get 10 feet.

We just got through redoing our control booth. Now we have the ability to see all our rooms, activate alarms, turn on house and emergency lights and control all audio and visual effects. Having all these functions in one spot has many benefits such as emergencies, blackouts or just simple problems like the power flickering.
