Hey Guys just figured Id share our Radio commercial from last year with you.
Here in Michigan the Radio stations are over saturated with generic haunted House commercials, that all sound the same and are hard to tell whos who. So we took a different approach from your typical commercial....

There are a few catch phrases in there that seem to catch the listeners attention .

Sounds fun, I almost expected to here "but wait theres more!". I dont know your market but im normally not a fan of haunt ads that put down other haunts, It may be justified and necesary in certain markets, so I dont look down on those who do it. Im glad the campain worked out well for you.

Actually Allen, Im a firm believer in NOT putting down other haunted Attractions, in fact I push hard for Cross promoting among all of our local venues.
But BIG BUT in this case, This Commercial was in retaliation to a Local Haunt owner inserting Dont go to the DARKSYDE in his $180,000.00 worth of radio commercials.

some say he did me a favor by inserting my name into everyone of his commercials that you hear every other 5 seconds during sept.-oct. personally I dont see it that way.

That truly is a funny ad.
Do you think this industry is ready for change in the way haunts use and buy media?
Tired of that radio ad you bought sounding like some lame DJ yelling that your haunt is the biggest thing since ELVIRA's TITs?
We have thought of sharing our secrets on how to produce high end radio and television ads for just the haunt industry. We have all of the tools and the people that actually do this for a living and that love the haunt industry. These would all be custom to fit your needs and no two would sound alike. The people that would be doing this do it for a living, (not a side gig) and they are some of the best out there.
Anyone that would like us to send samples of our work just ask. We would love to show off what kind of things you can do with a small budget, and to make you stand out from the competition..

I find that one of the biggest issues I have with having a Radio Station create an ad would be the fact that 99% of the time its done by one of their DJs which is a recognizable, identifiable voice, and listeners tune it out of their head.

Ive heard quite a few good outsourced commercials, in Fact there is a gentleman on the forums that makes fantastic commercials for haunts.

Here we go again...I know no one is going to say it so I guess I have to be the "bad guy", with morals.

Why in the world would you say in your haunted house ads you "couldn't even buy a hooker for $20" and then have a latino girl respond in your ad? And then you shoot a zombie in the "wrong head"? Yet again, I find myself at odds with the way we as an industry portray ourselves to the public if I heard that I would simply NOT visit your haunt and I'm sure I'm not alone. It's in poor taste, does nothing to sell your product, and takes away attention to the point of the ad, your HAUNTED ATTRACTION! If it worked for you, then that's great for you but I wonder if another approach might have done better for you?

Also, you are critical towards your competition and you say you get three haunted houses for $20, so what if they happen to be three bad haunts? People would rather go to one great haunt than 2-4 mediocre ones at an attraction. I'm not implying your haunts are mediocre at all, just saying it might be a good idea to say you get three great or scary haunted houses for only $20.

I'm sure this will open the flood gates of Dark-anal hate, but my intent is pro-industry and I would much rather see haunts do creepy, scary, but with style and class in their presentations than to try to attract the bottom feeders of society for customers. It's not the early days of haunting anymore and we should not have to stoop to this level anymore....

Dark Angel, your opinion is duly noted, and no hatred reply here from me, as you stated, if this works for me, then do it. I feel that humor is huge and if I am able to separate my attraction from the others by using abit of humor, then I do it. On a sidenote, those that attended our attraction and mentioned the radio ad, loved repeating the Dead Hooker and Wrong Head promos to anyone that would listen.
Its memorable and creates a lasting impression, apparently in some cases not a favorable one.
Truthfully I dont feel im critical of other haunts, I feel if you represent yourself as something you should be what you represent. 2010 DarkSyde Acres had 3 haunted houses, for $20 which I promoted, we also had Zombie Paintball which we promoted, what we did not promote was our huge drive in screen, our Midway, our live bands. but then again we only have 60 seconds per spot, and as you see I chose to insert my choice of humor to catch and HOLD the listeners attention.

Well said, I appreciate your level-headed response. Like I said, if it worked for you then that's great. It's not the approach I would take or like done to represent our industry, but to each their own.

Hey Rob,

I've been trying to reach you, left a message on the haunt number. Please call me when you get a chance.

I like the radio spot, definately breaks through the clutter. Your audience is teens and college students and they'll probably enjoy the humor. Why not have two spots; the one you have and another spot that is typical haunt related. Just a thought. I can recommend someone that does fantastic work.

We really enjoyed seeing your haunt last year. We're planning to include it on our MHC bus tour in 2012.

It is definitely different than any haunt ad I've heard. I think DA makes some good points (did I just say that? :)) but then again, since when was the haunt industry the most PC industry? I DO love that you are being creative and doing something DIFFERENT.

I also get why you retaliated to the other guy, but listeners might not have picked up on it and you didn't single him out like he did to you so I could see other haunts unintentionally being affected by it. Not sure if there are others around or if it is just the two. Honestly it just kills me when I hear that haunts are at odds when they could be doing so much better by working together (or at least not working against each other).

Is that your voice? I like it.

Yes I can get a few of those to you if you'd like. you can got to http://www.atroxfactory.com for what we used last year for video. This was for our character DEVLIN.. Pretty simple and you can also you tube it for more video.. Most of these are filmed on location but can be shot anywhere..

Thanks for the input everybody, ZombiePhobe, Actually we are in Michigan and have a huge market, but within our LOCAL Market there were only 2 Haunted Houses utilizing the "Number 1 Rated SCARY Haunted house" advertisement, Both Owned by the gentleman that said dont go to the DarkSyde, So in our local market it was Clear who we were referring to. We dont have a huge advertisement budget and limited Radio spots, so we did what we could the best we could.

Kelly,yes our target market is Teens and college students, seeing how we are within driving distance of the 3 major Colleges here in Michigan and countless other smaller schools.

"Huh! It will probably rain soon!" Grumble grumble....
In a perfect world.....
"Entertainment" almost always has to stimulate and bring up odd things, strange ideas seem to hold sway in this field, attracting a crowd. There are personal limits that entertainers should have for themselves because it hard to "Un-Say" something and apologys don't always cut it.
The more radical, the larger percentage of certain groups will drop away from those refrences. It's a balancing act.
The reward for success is.. being successfull, the flip-side is boring people who then wonder why they bothered? What's all the hype about? "I paid money for this?"
I think "Body's" ad was very good, funny, strange a bit risque, and memorable on all accounts. The Sunday school youth group leader might not like, but the kids they bring would and they would come back next weekend with their friends.
Life is a mixture. We all have choices to make, unless we chose to copy , imitate, and never ever "explore" on our own.

Rob, in this case I think AJ is a good example to listen too since he is an enthusiast and visits many haunts, his perspective is different than that of an owner.

Also, I wouldn't assume that all teens and college students would be attracted to vulgarity, a lot are, but there are plenty that would frown upon marketing like that.

DA I dont feel that there is anything remotely vulgar in my commercial, One of the most popular television shows made millions off of showing videos of NUT Shots, (Americas Funniest home videos) I do not know of a guy alive that doesnt either gringe or crack up at the thought of taking a shot to their nono spot.... And as for for our dead hooker, well that may be abit tasteless but seeing how our back story ties into the Pig farmer serial killer that murdered a slew of hookers and fed them to his pigs.....(DarkSyde Acres is located on a old goverment backed pig farm, with a tainted history of its own.)
The Best Part of this Industry is there are many, many attractions to choose from, and if someone finds my advertisment offensive, They can choose to go to the Attraction down the road, Very much like if I dont like BURGER KING, Im going to go to McDonalds, or Arbys, or wendys or if I feel like going somewhere totally off the hamburger fastfood grid, Ill hit Kentucky fried chicken, But I DONT HAVE to go to BURGERKING. :)
DA, no matter what you or I or anyone does in life, there will never be any pleasing everyone any of the time, and we have to do what makes US happy at the end of the day.

I thought it was funny AND it helped him stand way apart from the rest of the pack. Isn't that what good advertising is supposed to do? It's so true EVERY haunt is the scariest, EVERY haunt is the biggest, EVERY haunt has been voted #1 (by who...your friends or by some radio intern who has no idea what criteria to use when judging us)...it's all the same...except this one. When the PR Girl says Yes you can Poppy I cracked up. It was not rauchy...just a little blue...and it worked for me. Good luck with it. Rich Hanf

I like the commercial. There's no point in saying you're the scariest if your competition is doing the same exact thing. Your commercial is memorable and if someone is offended they wouldn't have visited your haunt in the first place. I can't imagine someone complaining since there are a lot more offensive things in haunts.

"Sir, I'm offended about you talking about dead hookers in your commercial."

Response: "So, you weren't offended by the rotting corpses, severed body parts, skulls, screams of terror and torture, serial killers, monsters inches from your face, killer clowns, carcasses of animals, dead babies, devil worship, scenes or murder, girls with boobs hanging out and everything that could possibly be deemed offensive at every other haunt you visit these days. But talking about a dead hooker is what put you over the edge.

Noah and Katie, Im glad that you both liked the Commercial, Its true we do things a little different here at DarkSyde, but again thats what separates us from our competition.

On a different note speaking of "The DEAD HOOKER" One of our Radio stations refused to air the original and ended up Bleeping out the term dead hooker , funny thing is that when the altered commercial hit the airwaves, it totally sounded like I said you cant buy a "WHORE" for 20 dollars... Yeah that was better... go figure..... They also altered the Wrong Head portion... As much as I enjoyed working with THAT radio station, we will not be advertising with them again, Never been big on Censorship.

Just watched the latest SYFY Faceoff episode, and oddly enough, one of the pieces was a Dead Hooker, actually a Zombie Hooker....lol sad to say He got Booted , but it wasnt due to the concept being vulgar but for his FX work not being well executed in this piece. :sad:
