View Full Version : Fire Retardants, How much to order?

I could not find what I was searching for in past fire retardant post topics. I apologize if this question has been asked before!

I'm looking at both the Universal Fire Shield (via Scareproducts.com) and the famous NY Fire-Shield.

Both of them offer Latex Paint Additive or strictly Wood Shield. Not quite sure what is best for the situation.

We have approximately 280 pieces of plywood and I was curious as to how far the fire retardant products go considering you can buy them by the gallon, 5G, or even 55G on NY Fire-Shield's website.

All of our wall panels are going to be painted for a variety of rooms. I would say about 100 of those 280 pieces will be black. And about 20 will be covered with full 4x8 vacuform pieces.

From what I have gathered the fire retardants appear to be clear like a lacquer unless you add a "tint" to them.

Is there a right way and a wrong way to coat panels with fire retardant? :confused: Say we paint all our panels and then coat them with the Wood Shield. -or- purchase the Latex Paint additive fire retardant and make it all one step? There seems to be a bit of a price difference for the Latex Paint Additive fire retardant product.

Besides deciding which fire retardant product is the better choice I'd really like to get an estimate on how much we'll be needing for apx. 280 pieces.

Any advice is greatly appreciated ladies and gents!

Actually, you apply FireShield with your everyday Bug Sprayer. Looks like water.

Easy to use and goes fast.

As far as the amount needed.

All you have to do is call them OR they have a calculator on their site so you can figure it out on your own.

Oh, so even though you buy it by the gallon or gallon(s) it's not like a clearcoat brushed over?

We've already got a couple of those bug/chemical sprayers that you pump and spray.

I didn't see the calculator on their site but it did mention 1 gallon will cover approximately 300 sq ft for WOOD. I believe it was roughly 500 for covering fabrics. So that helps give me a better idea of how much I need now!

Its not like a brushable clear coat.

The sprayers you have will work perfectly.

One last quick question. So most of you guys paint all your panels however you want them to be and just spray the fire retardant over them all when you're done?

That seems easy. How come someone may use the "latex additive" fire retardant product instead and make it all one step? Or is that more of a pain to do it that way..

The NYFS has to be applied to raw wood. It does not work on painted surfaces. It has to be able to soak into what ever it is being sprayed on. NYFS gives your surface a Class A flame spread rating (according to NFPA 101 you can have a Class B rating if you have sprinklers). Once you paint over the treated wood you lose the Class A flame spread surface rating so you need to use a paint additive in the paint as well. Some people just use the paint additive. It really depends on what your fire marshall will allow.

This is a great way to apply the actual retardant, while walking through your Haunt. Keep it cleaned after though, FR is very corrisive.

Hello All ~

Regarding Fire Retardand .... as mentioned there is Universal Fire Retardant... and NY Fire Shield.

And also mentioned that one cane be just sprayed on and one has to go on RAW wood..

What about spraying EITHER of those .. with a sprayer on OTHER sufaces, such as plastic.. cloth.. latex. etc. things that could potentially be used as different prop materials.

Granted, yes some vendors do(or should) "imbude" there products with some sort of fire retardant. But say for instance they don't .. or your not 100% sure if they do or not..

What woudl be the proper procedure to do so on those types of materials.

DO they have to be "roughed up" first for the retardant to stick and be absorbed by the material... or is the retardant that "corrosive" that it will eat through a finish that might be on say a plastic skull .. or a pre painted dresser or whatever the finished surface happens to be ?

Yes I know many quesrtions here, just trying to get more of anidea on the way fire retardant can and shoudl be used .. and WHERE it MUST be used ..
