I have a guillotine, but it's not an 18th century authentic model. It is a very solid built fully operational one though. The framework is heavy steel tubing and is covered with wood to give it a nice period look. When the trigger is pulled, the heavy steel blade drops with a great slide and bang and a pre-severed head, placed in the holder, drops into the awaiting basket. You can check out a picture of it here:
It stands about 8' tall and is pretty hefty. The body table is attached and folds up for storage or transport:

Your info says you're from St. Louis. I would figure out how authentic you want to go, what your budget is and then contact a few local companies.

Larry's Halloween Productions http://www.halloweenproductions.com/ or Mark McDonough of Creative Visions: http://www.creativevisionsonline.com/contact.html are your closest bets. Kip Polley of Pale Night Productions is close by in Illinois, he does work for Larry. http://www.palenightproductions.com/contact.html

These guys can give you the authenticity you may be looking for and the pieces will be large and heavy so shipping is a concern and they can just deliver.
Also they can give you the quality if it is indeed going into a museum setting. If you don't want a Halloween prop but a historical recreation, these guys are your best choice.
