with Walt Disney and over exposed on my mind
and too much mountain dew to get to sleep
I thought i might inspire with a Haunted Hooch thread
or at least show off a little of our swagger
this is something we did way back and is a HH classic now...
i could see it fit nicely into a place like haunted overload
or maybe your haunted house
this is a 200 year old oak tree that we dressed up a lil
an actor with cables made his eye lids blink and his mouth move
and armed with a mic heckled patrons as they passed
with material like get off my nuts etc etc...ahhh good times

I think it would be cool if all the haunts could find their 1980s, 1990's and to present photos and post them.
Lets see how they transform over decades

That'd be killer Larry! I wished my hard drive didn't crash, I'd show a nice range of my parties :(
They weren't no "Darkness" sets by no means, but man you can sure tell a difference. They started looking nice for a party in the end. Too bad I quit a few years ago.
Ohh btw: Love the tree :D I lol'd about the "nuts"

the year was 1990 and we were in the concert business as was Dave Faukman..
thats right i am about to show off preScarefactory and all the spin offs that followed
anyways it was a guillotine were the head once again heckled the crowd before and after the decapitation
the eyes and mouth both moved with air and the valves were hand controlled so the guy running the mic could say anything he wanted and keep the mouth in time...
just a steal frame head with actuators a mask and Velcro... the guillotine was enormous and made just the same way we do it today..all 100 year old oak and a stainless blade..
the head once cut off hung from 550 cord and swung towards the crowd..
everyone thought it was great. now its like a trophy in my office

i think this guy (slim pickens)came next.. actually not but i cant find a pic of the one before him named maggy otts..
which we used a spring instead of a pneumatic. and he fly up super fast..
soo they laid on the ground infront of a tombstone that said maggy otts
and were covered with wet rice...soo when they flew up it thew wet sticky rice on the patrons...
which looked like maggots... definitely the good old days

Jake all i could find is vid of walking right past it..
i cant find any of it in action
i'm sure its out there somewhere
i'll keep looking because its hilarious
Larry i agree and plan too
Frightener i know right..
and its just one after another joke like like that....
sooo heres something interesting about the last pic..
on the left is a horse head skull that we glued big sharp teeth
and spikes on his nose...and all down his back
what you cant see is
he is a total prehistoric looking skeleton wired together..
when the crowd approached an actor would rattle the bones to kick off the show
and when people looked at the skeleton..
maggy otts would fly up..
throwing wet rice
then the actor fly's up from right behind them
man it takes me back...

but the fact is we are all inspired by everything we see and experience and
these inspirations are what takes all of us from where we are to where we are going...
soo just passing sum of it around
you cant think of the old hooch without thinking of the flying chainsaw
this guy flew over the heads of thousands of unsuspecting hoochie heads back in the day
waiting til the last second to start his saw n rev right over them...

One of my favorite memories is having the chainsaw maniac flying overhead. I've never seen it anywhere else. I've been going to Haunted Hoochie since 2001. Whenever I hear the song "Down With The Sickness", I think of Haunted Hoochie. Who can forget the fire breathing dragon, fire breathing demons, the massive skulls that would hit the fence, the animated hangman or the massive skeleton puppet that emerged from the woods?

Hoochie is one of a kind...
I remember blasting a chunk out of the bottom of my foot when taking hits off my Mini Tesla coil there and grounding out on a steel lean plate. One of the actors took a blast to the head! I shut it off after that! It was at a Midwest maybe 6 or so years ago?

I did have a coil at that party at midwest I think that was a year or two later, I was dressed as Frankenstein. That was when my son popped off the coil when my back was turned and it arced to my metal chains in the costume - It caught my burlap vest on fire! People put it out in seconds and I was all ...What happened?

DA...there is no shortage of the influence we have had on this industry..
does anybody know if there was any big animation companies before scarefactory ?
I remember back when Dave Faulkman was contracted to operate a haunt for clear channel here in Columbus in maybe 94 or 5
He came thru and was blown away...and he was da biggest man in the concert scene i know...
...i was honored he even knew my name...
he sold promowest to Jules Belkin and he rolled all his profits into scarefactory and started selling to haunts the next year or so...
we have been friends ever since

and i don't worship Satan
I merely operate a kick ass haunted house
his head moves back in fourth n up n down
he came later maybe 98 or so
he was most awesome sitting on top of the haunt over looking the crowd
and since we built dead acres
that is still what he does today
and while we r talking fire..
its maybe important to point out..
that our fire inspector literally lived at the hooch back then

this is my passion and i was a lucky kid
to grow up in this business...
my grandfather had been doing a haunted hayride here on our farm since the fifties
but ended when i was in eighth grade...
but i already had it in my blood
my friends and i never stopped talking about running a haunt ....
when i was 20 i bought the farm and started living my childhood dream..
and now members on council had been here getting scared as kids...
the truth is we just have a blast out here
and it shows...
we always had rock n roll bands playing and this guy sat on top of the stage

my grandfather gave me my first shot gun on my 9th birthday
i started paying on my first truck at 13
i used wake up and run trap line at 4 am
come home n milk cows
then take a shower
eat breakfast then go to school....
once at 14 i got pulled over by the county sheriff ...alone..
i even had a gun but he let me go with a warning
the next morning he saw me again and he waved as he drove by...
all the boys in high school had a gun in the gun rack and a knife on their belt
we were living in America
and we were free
now fingernail clippers will get a kid expelled ...
what have we become ?
here are the pair of gargoyles on top of the stage
its 2 semi trailers parked together...
crappy pic i know but its our history..
and history isn't always a clear picture

and no doubt will be something everyone will soon want in their haunt..
and all the while we have been talking about inspiration...and how it is unavoidable to not be influenced..
although we were oblivious to what other haunts were doing around the country...pre internet back then...
while we were blazing a path borne outta our own minds we also watched movies...

Awesome thread Timbo!!! Its truly making my brutal blood boil with nasty necrostalgia!!! I am lucky to by now i think to be remembered as one of the originals. The ones who built the haunted hoochie up with just sadistic ideas, blood, sweat, and shear devouring determination to do diabolical deeds to people and stay outta jail, lol....well all that and a whole lotta trips to the hardware store. Im proud of my 17 years with you man, & what youve help me acomplish in my life. I was just a 15 yr old kid when I wandered onto your farm with just a hunger to scare. The endless support you show us all, especially me in creation and the very idea of creavtivity, balls to the wall, no limits chaos kind of creation. And quite the brainstorms you have sent me into, hell brain hurricanes!!! How else could I have come up with the idea for the DEMON BIRTH that has sent shock waves that I have seen through the industry. You never saw even the idea of birth and mutilation even mentioned...even discussion of such too Taboo...until....It pops in this sick brain u created in me..out of no where the next year there are bloody babies and fetuses flying across the show floor in Vegas!! Lmao. hell...even I thought....."NOOOOO....We cant do that! can we...? NOOO!" But two words from you Tim have always stuck with me, almost guiding me through life, "Why Not". wisdom to live to die by right there.
so instead of going back to my boring job, i called you and hesitantly told you my gruesome totally outrageous offensive never been done because of so IDEA.
.....and I will never will forget your explosive enthuisiasm. "HELL FUCKIN YES!!!! I know just how to engineer it. Its PERFECT!! I'm out the door to start on it RIGHT NOW!!"
(it was dead december winter folks, maybe christmas eve, record 100 year ICE storm was in effect all I can remember is thinking hes finally gone crazy)
thats the kind of work ethic it takes to be such a pioneer, such an inspiration as Tim is to us all. I know it seems im laying it on kinda of thick, but im really not. he truly is one of a kind, my mentor in mayhem...my brother.

my absolute favorite kinda metal is rusty
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m88/deadacres/remorse549.jpg[/IMG]]
the project of moving haunted hoochie indoors to dead acres was 7 years in the making ..
and i had many visions of what i wanted it to be like...and that included alot of rusty metal...
i am a certified rusty metal head....
so out behind the new building i started a rusty relic pile...
that grew over the years...and after we moved
i started placing relics from the pile...
the last of it i grabbed with the bobcat forks...and carried to where i was using them..
and at the very bottom of this pile was this cemetery gate...
but i had never put this gate in the pile...
i had never even seen this gate before...
apparently it had been under the ground where i started this pile of rusty relics....
waiting there through the years...
apparently over many many decades ...
to become part of dead acres......
or maybe the haunt is built over on old abandoned cemetery...i just don't know..
anyways i thought that was something special to share with u all...

i hate reading on here about how haunts sucked back in the day....?????
speak for your self...
haunted hoochie was kick ass....and still is...
to kinda quote the black eyed peas..
if your not 3008 then your 2000 n late
back then we were paving the way to what haunted houses have become today...
and we still are
this is what we called the wipeout...
another haunted hoochie original ....
its an old Kawasaki drag bike ....
and would pile em up back in the day...

DA
badass
05-03-2012, 08:57 AM
yeah dark..i was puttin my own spin on their lyrics...
if your not paving the way then your just following the herd...
was my point..
the fact is the old hooch is truly not well documented...
i am amazed at how much we just took for granted...
for example we were carving foam mausoleums and facades with hardly a pic to be found in my collection..
like video of the talking tree in action...
or this great effect where we had this huge monster that lifted the roof off the building and reached in at the patrons with a huge hand....not one pic...uugh
we still have the head ...
we use now use in bad trip in 3d but no pics or video of the kick ass effect of having a monster looking in and reaching at your group.....
at least not that has been uncovered yet...
and soo many more simple ideas and effects that didnt seem so revolutionary ..
until a vendor is selling them in chicago... omg...
we all evolve and back then i was too wrapped up in creating and not enough of taking pics and video...
now days i may take 100 pics to get that perfect pic to present to the public...
its a testament of my evilution that i will even show off old pics here on hauntworld....
i am always concerned about how i represent my passion...my art
and those old day pics just don't live up to my current standards...
but i am only here to show off to my peers...
stir up some ideas for others to use....
and show where some of these creations originated...
for us anyways...cause like i said before we just didnt have anyway to gauge what other haunts were doing...
we were flying without a map so to speak....
which if you ask me is where the magic happens...
its not wondering what the next big movement for the industry is ...
its just following your own passion...
look at any of the great haunts...
you could say Ben Armstrongs parade march is big for this industry....
or his adding lions and elephant bones and more to a haunt is big...its changing the game..and changes perceptions..now a haunt can be like a museum...
or even hitting your costumer's in the parking lot with amazing actors...
the list goes on...
but its passion that is the driving force that changes everything...
all the greats are the same...
haunted overload's effigy inspired buildings..etc...its his ...it has Erics stamp on it...
erebus...Eds vision of what a haunted house is...is painted on everything in that house...
house of shock...Ross is soo passionate about this game we all play...maybe too passionate..haha
the next big thing for this industry is sitting out in your garage...
you just take this thing...and add some more of those things to it..
and talk to that guy down the street that knows how to help make this idea happen...
its all in your head and you already know its gonna be great....
when u follow your passion...
you are a leader...
and it doesnt matter if your idea ends up in haunts all over the country...
you are making a living doing what you love to do...and for me that's reward enough...
but your idea just might catch on...
and change how everyone thinks about haunted houses....
hope that came out right...
i better get back to work...

does anyone know of another haunt back in the 90s that was making monsters like this ???
or even to this day..?? he is definitely a monster of monstrous proportions
yet he was just part of the infancy of the Dead Acres

thank you Eric...its been a great ride...
my gramps got me into all this...he was doing a haunted hayride here on our farm since 53,
they did all the old horror at the time..wolfman...creature from the black lagoon..frankenstein etc..
my grandfather rode a horse as the headless horseman...
now a member of city council and the clerk both had come to our farm to enjoy the haunted hayrides as kids...
soo for me its a family tradition
i was talking to one of the grandkids of Dave Grim one of my gramps friends and partner..
and they were just tellin me that they still have an original horse hair wolfman costume that my gramp and his grandfather had made back in the fifties...
he lives around here but the costume is in Missouri at one of uncles...i think Dave Grim had 12 kids....crazy...
but there's a high price auction piece ....
soo anyways when i took over this biz we started off with a bang making things
like it had been bottled up just waiting to get out...
apparently things that had never been done before
soo while i am still around in this biz i figured i would show this community a lil haunted history...
i wish we had some kinda haunted historian on here who could enlighten us
when i did a lil research i cant find anything before distortions electric chair...
and we were doing things that just plain blew that kinda thing away.....
i remember the same year we made our first kicking body for a hanging scene..
Dale Feazel had the idea and Mike Lucas who was working on airplanes, had the technology..
we made a steal armature that just hinged at the waist and the knees...one actuator for the waist and the knees just freely swinging...
we put a hood over his head and gloves on his hands and when he worked it just made us laugh at how unbelievably real it looked...
people who would come thru never guessed he was an animation...
they would say ...i dont know how much you pay that guy but its not enough....
man those were the best of times....
badass

Dark..
thank you too....
ill tell you you have to hand it to all the haunts that open in the summer for midwest...
i have done it 3 times now and it is aot of work...and right in the middle of building season...
i do this whole thing outta love...NOT for money...and i know the last time we opened for MHC we made 11 grand for childrens hospital...
which i know some of you know holds a special place in our hearts here...
while we were building the first hack in 1994 my son was born with hirshbrungs disease and we lost him at 10 months old...
my daughter who is now 12 has the same disease....we battle it everyday...and we are blessed to have childrens hospital here in columbus...
when we had timmy my son we had insurance
but the bills beyond the coverage was over 3 million...
soon after his death ...childrens ripped up what we owed them....God bless em
we have made some amazing things since we lastly opened for MHC
and i do like to show off...
sooo maybe
let me think on it awhile

its not often i bare myself
my family, ,my passion...
for histories sake...
anyways...
red head got lonely so we made him a partner
his name is pug head...
they teamed up to scare..
while one had your attention the other came from behind...

one of which still employs one of our old employees...

Well here is a picture of our Giant Back Pack Rod puppets. The naked old man is called " Spooky Ernie" and this is where it all started. He was built in the mid 90s. 15' tall and scary as hell when coming at you. The Robot named "Cranky" was built the following year. And the other 2 "Giggles" and "Zang the Destroyer" were built a couple years later. The first 2 were hand built soft sculpts. "Giggles" and "Zang" have molded parts for reproduction. These beasts are the fathers to ALL our other Oversized costumes. And the first 2 were done YEARS befor Gore Galore was even a gore (fore) thought.

The NE haunts aren't impressive at all; more of the big prop/animatronic and teenagers in goodies and masks if you know what I mean lol. I wish I had somebody like you to learn from over here!

Now the hard part: convincing my fiancé that flying up there to see a haunt is a BUSINESS trip (actually it would be an awesome investment of resources!)
Seriously that is awesome of you.

i haven't really gotten into my brutal side on these bible belted forums..
the haunted hoochie is brutality at its best...
and with the posting of eli roths house it makes me think about my inner workings of my haunted mind...
eli and i are eye to eye on a few things...
as u know...
brutal reality is king
too me fantasy is fine....when your young...but not sprinkled all over your haunted house...unless its for kids...
cheese you may call it.....ie fake....ask your self is there static props just hangin out in my haunt..??
answer yes and your haunt might have a cheese factor...the more you have the cheesier it is gets....
my haunt has changed alot from the early days....but my commitment to realism hasn't..
and realism isn't just fancy sets...
its a state of mind...
its how u feel when the guy bagging your groceries...
is standing in your bathroom when u step outta the shower...
ordinary people can commit exceedingly extraordinary acts of brutality ...
and that my friends is scary shit.. and very damn real..
haunted hoochie deals in real and we do it well...
but we live in a morally fragile society....
and our moral decisions have consequences..
and not just for us...but everyone in our world...
to me loading blood is extremely easy...buy a pump..
btw...
there is so much more to it...and
if u haven't been able to figure that out
maybe u should not do it
first step is load the gun....

Wow, just goes to show you how much creativity they have lol. That's the pic right of Haunt World's cover! We made a huge mistake partnering up with them back in 2010. Back then they were not a haunt, but just promoters. They saw how many people we brought in and wanted us to partner with them in 2011. We said we are going to stay on our own and will do the promotions ourselves. They got mad and started threatening us saying we better give them our website and our haunt name or they will do this to us and that. Last year we did get our outdoor facade vandalized. This year we gotten tighter security with surveillance cameras and actual undercover police walking around. We hope we can have a smooth 2012 season.

and they come from soo far away...
i spoke to a group that had drove up from Florida ...
they said they have come every year for the last 3 years....
and a group from Maryland..and Missouri
hope its the same for everybody else...just a great start to another great season...

seems this one couldn't handle the first weekend at 40 psi...haha..
another industry standard ...if your gonna be a haunter u better have a welder...
i didnt see this one coming..they looked well put together to me..looks like maybe a lil reinforcement should do the trick...
the other ones held up as far as i know....normally we can see problems with design or engineering and fix them before we start...
and we always let the vendor know our concerns for future designs.....
but this one got by us...
the problem we saw right off is those bearings being welded in...although that's not what broke..we have had problems with them in the past..and will be hard to remove when welded in..
but they held up so far....sorry brother kev but u asked...
as for the vendors that promised product in June and they still haven't arrived...save some shipping and send our thousands of dollars deposit back...
i know u get on here cause u pm'ed me and made more broken promises...honestly cant wait to see u guys again...
here is a tip from a guy who has been in this biz for a minute..buy a year in advance...that way you are not putting your reputation on the line or holding up your build because of a vendors integrity that is outta your control...

Actually they are put together very well.
We also weld in gussets in all the angles now.
And I really wish you would have emailed this to me when it happened. It helps us make constant improvements to our products. And that is the only way we can help you.
Which you know we always do.
40 psi is the proper operating procedure.
Did you make any adjustments to the flow control exhaust valves?
We set them at the proper operating speed. But somehow they adjust themselves in or out sometimes and other times the customer readjusts them.
So, please check the others. They do not need to move fast to look good. And this puts unneeded stress on the armatures.
Do you need us to send you any gussets or anything to make the repairs?

no way kevin..we got this one...i was readin the thread when toby came in the office and told me about the break..
i took the picture just prior to posting and now we r back up and running..
no gussets were there..but there are now..we r good..
looks like he was cathin some bones on the floor..probably had alot to do with it...
the fact is animations break...we know it going in..we break em..
and we fix them..nature of the beast
and we play rough...

Kevin..
i knew thats how u would feel..sorry...some conversations aren't for a forum..
and are easily misinterpreted...and i am a sarcastic ass..me admitting that doesn't solve it..
but to me... what u said was funny
i know u are an upstanding member of this community and dont run from problems..
like some other vendors do..
the thing about building animatronics
is its a learning curve..hence gussets have been added..i am not sore in the slightest..
i have spent 35 grand on animations and welded on them every single weekend all season long..
and even in that situation..i understand that some things just cant be figured out til its in operation and taking on abuse..
i looked at those heads before they were installed and looked built like brick out houses...
i hope no hard feelings.....i know u stand behind your product...just like all passionate people do..
again sorry for the sarcasm
on another note..this post has 10,666 views...must be a sign

Thank you!
I so very much appreciate you seeing that we do build animatronics and giant costumes to take a beating, and knowing I and my company are here for the long haul.
thank you for basically posting for me, what I was going to respond with.
But I decided to take the high road and not respond with hurt feelings and say something I would regret.
Sadly, it is just so hard to see the intent or humor in writing.
But like I said, I do get where you are coming from.
I can't speak for vendors in general, but we build everything the best we think they can be built.
And like you said, we also improve as we go, so we now add gussets at all the joints.
thanks again,

I just have to say I went to the Hoochie on Sat. And I was blown away.
There queueline is huge because it has to be. I bet there were an easy 500 people in line. We hung out and talked with the crew till about 1am, and the line stayed that way all night long
So they had to have run 2000 that night alone.
The level of detail is over the top. Tim and his crew do not build things like a theatrical set so it "LOOKS" real.
They build them and they are real. what I mean is if you see a rock wall, it is not vacuform. It is a REAL rock wall. And that is how they do everything.
And the sets were very cohesive.
You can tell the actor's love it. Lots of high energy. and they read the customer. And would respond based on that read.
Of course it is all very over the top.
If you get a chance, you should check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks TIM,
I really appreciate the hoochie treatment.

The Land of Illusion seem to really like playing dirty tricks.
Last year I was to meet a friend at the Dent Schoolhouse. He googled "Dent Schoolhouse Address" and plugged the first result into his GPS. Guess where he ended up?
The Land of Illusion.
I haven't been back there since they got caught swiping competitors signs a few years ago.

The state highway def. backs up I think we sat there in traffic for a good 15 mins. It was about a mile back up. I know the time it took to buy our VIP tickets (about 10 mins) the parking lot where we parked was already half full and we were in the very front of it. Car after car pulled in none stop, I am surprised you didn't run out of parking. Thats a problem that any haunt would love to have, if they had the size lots you have.
No problem about not getting to see behind the scenes. You guys were swamped I completely understand. I think a lot had to do with the nice weather.
Just one suggestion, with the amount of rain you guys normally get in October. You might want to fill in the area in the VIP line that was a giant puddle Saturday night. It might allow for the VIP line to have a small Que area instead of being a straight line way out into the parking lot and across the path of traffic on the nights where it gets that long. You guys did do a good job with security at the traffic crossing though so Kudos for that.

ok...here it is...
some haunted houses build sets
try to make em look real etc...
we build real..
and holly wood has noticed...
and instead of us going to hollywood...
hollywood is coming to the hooch...thats right..
this year we will be shooting a movie here at Dead Acres...
the location manager of the film has secured our haunt for most of the summer...licking county and columbus ohio are both pitching in
the project is being called harvest season at Dead Acres....not sure if that will be the name of the movie ....maybe..
it is based on a story about a haunted house that wants to be the best haunt in the world...
and soo instead of actors...they kidnap patrons..n torcher them live on stage ...
no wonder they picked our location right...
i dont really know too much more yet...but they r paying us to have the haunt up and in running condition in march...
which is a huge project....as u all know...the hooch isnt your everyday kinda haunt...
but heres a spin off of the movie...
we will be opening for midwest haunters convention for the friday night bus tour...
sooo i suggest if u have ever wondered what the Hell is really going on out here...
u get here n check it out for yourself....
this may be your last chance...
thanks i look forward to seeing u all very soon....at all of our favorite convention the Midwest Haunters
