I'm new to this site. My name is Freddie and I am a promoter in Jackson, Mississippi . I've been searching around and I can't find any haunted houses anywhere in this area.... and this is the capital city of Mississippi. Needless to say there is a supply and demand opportunity for an awesome haunted house. I've got access to venues, relationships with radio station. Jackson has over 500,000 in population. Over 30 highschool in the Metro area. The problem is I don't have the know how to get started. Also I have friends who are sponsors. Any help?????

Lots of money and lots of time. You need to find a good building with a good parking lot. Then you need to check with your city for building permits and check the codes that you need to follow. Here in Michigan your building MUST HAVE a working fire sprinkler system and bathrooms or port-a-potties. Some places even require a fire alarm system. You need to get insurance to protect yourself and your haunt from people getting hurt inside your haunt. "lawsuits?" You will put all your blood sweat and tears into your house. It takes a lot of time and effort to building a haunt.

I went to haunts, bought books and dvd's, traveled to tradeshows, took business classes, talked to a lot of haunters, and got involved with non-profit haunt first. It took me four years to start a commercial haunt.

Seriously... go work at other haunts first to get a taste for what you're up against. Doing a haunt is a BUSINESS first and foremost (even if it's a charity haunt), with the added dimension of having unusual safety requirements for your customers.
Try to be an Assistant Haunt Manager or something close to that to get a taste for what's involved. Or work with the acting coach to learn about scheduling headaches!
Oh, primo #1 thing! Build a good working relationship with your fire marshal - and always do what they ask!
But even with all the hassle, it's still a kick in the pants fun thing to do!

Hello, well, if you want to take your experience as a promoter and start a haunt, there are a few haunt owners I highly suggest you speak to. I have worked as a acting/makeup consultant for most of these highly respected and motivated haunted attraction owners. Their combined experience in the areas of marketing, t.v. production, promotions, acting, and self-promotion are unparelled. Here is my list of the people you should talk to:
Tim Gavinsky- Morgan Manor, Waukeshaw,WI
Ben Armstrong- Netherworld, Atlanta,GA
Bob Turner- Haunted Hydro, Fremont, OH
Kelly Collins- Terror Park, Columbus, OH
Leonard Pickel- CEO/Editor/Haunted Attraction Magazine/Consultant, Charolette,NC
Ken Spriggs- Dream Reapers, Chicago, IL
Louis Brown- Darkwood Manor, Lurray, VA
These people will give you a lot of helpful advise on how to get started and hopefully avoid a lot of the "pitfalls" of being a haunt owner. Good luck on your quest!

READ KELLY ALLEN'S BOOK "SO YOU WANT TO BE A HAUNTREPRENEUR"... This will be the most benefitial book on opening a haunt you will EVER own!
I've read this book SEVERAL times and I can tell you that there is NOTHING the book really "leaves out". I can only hope that Kelly decides to keep updating the book and realeasing new versions/updates... BUY THIS BOOK!!! -Tyler
