View Full Version : 3d Glasses...upcharge?

I have a client who is showing some real interest in doing a 3D/UV maze this season, and that's fun.
The maze is one of 6 different attractions all included under one ticket-price.
The hiccup is that my client sees $ signs and actually wants to upcharge for the glasses at the door of the 3D/UV attraction.
I have urged the "suits" that I don't feel this is a wise idea because people will feel nickel-and dimed, even if the glasses are a buck or two.
Additionally, we all know that 3D artwork can look amazing, but why take on the expense of creating it if it won't be seen as intended?
I also forsee a scenario like this:
A group gets to the entrance of the attraction and are solicited to buy the glasses,
Group" "Do we have to buy the glasses to see/enjoy the attraction?"
Employee: "No, but it will enhance the experience."
Group: "Then we won't buy them if we don't have to."
This would of course end in a "no sale."
Have any of you ever done or experienced a 3D Haunt in which you had to buy the glasses as an upcharge element?
What were your thoughts on it?

Never been to a 3D haunt that charged for the glasses no. You are given the glasses and then you turn them in to an attendant at the end of the haunt. Maybe rewording optinal glasses to keep whatever? Then charge whatever you think you can get. I dont understand why you want to charge for them? Ya they can run into money but you should get 90% or more right back. Maybe if you sell a few you can pay for them or at least cover what you get back damaged or stolen? But dont charge everyone just for using them. I think thats a bad Idea. Give them an option and mark the paid ones differently so your help knows who bought theres and didnt.

Every house that I've been to that has 3D, gives the glasses at the beginning and the takes them at the end so they can be reused.

Yep thats what all of Halloween Productions 3D haunts do. And they are awesome! Unbelievable artwork! To say the least!

Knott's Scary Farm started a 3D haunt, and upcharged the glasses telling guests it will 'enhance the experience'. They sold those right in front of the attraction for an extra $2.00.
I think you can make some extra jack that way... but in all the 3D haunts we did we gave them the glasses free but collected them and tried to re-use them as many times as the glasses would hold up!
I think we averaged four wears per pair.

Funny thing is, Knott's is owned by the same company as Carowinds, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. I met Nick there a few seasons ago where he did an EXCELLENT job on my makeup, but anyway, Carowinds seasonal event, SCarowinds did the usual clown maze but decided to add 3D that season as well as sell the 3D glasses. I think they ended up being $1.00 at the door, which isn't a bank breaker, however, after paying to get in the park, parking, food, entertainment, and every other thing they wanted to charge you for, just to be charged for glasses makes you think as a customer "Really?".

If you are going to sell the glasses up front then in the line build a few boxes that have displays of 3D art. they look through a hole to see it with the glasses and one without. That way they get to see what the glasses do before getting the ability to purchase. It could also help alleviate some boredom in the line its self. Im not selling my glasses but Im doing this to spice up the line at my 3d show.
I also would not recommend selling them, add a buck to your admission if you must.

the minute you said they were talking about up-charge for the glasses at the door, I thought bad idea.
Mainly because it just looks bad from the buyer perspective. Getting charged at every turn just puts a bad taste in their mouths. You know that is ONE of the things they will remember from the event. You know you would rather them remember how awesome your event it. Not that you kept charging them for every part of the attraction.
And you are having a worker spending time trying to convince the audience to participate when they could be doing something else.
I would recommend building it into the price of the event.

The client did end up continuing to sell the glasses at an upcharge. The folks who purchased them say that it "made" the attraction, which is bittersweet because we all know a 3D attraction is meant to be seen in 3D! The people who chose not to buy didn't know what they were missing (which was the full effect.) Many folks, as Kevin mentioned, had a bad taste in their mouth because of the perceived "nickel and diming."
Allen, they did install a blacklight game near the entrance where people could play the game to "test" the glasses and it ended up selling quite a few pairs. I definitely agree that they need some proof that the glasses are going to add to the experience.
A few guests also echoed what you have mentioned..why not charge an extra dollar admission at the gate and give the glasses away as a souvenir.
The element that I think they were the most disappointed with was how so many nice people exiting the attraction would give their glasses to the other guests waiting in line.

Other than customers feeling that they were being “nickeled and dimed”, there could also be a backlash in the form of negative word-of-mouth chatter. Let’s say that a customer chose not to pay extra for the glasses, which resulted in less entertainment value overall. Now that dissatisfied customer may tell everyone he knows not to waste their time or money with the event, because it was less than stellar.
By upcharging for the glasses, you may make a few extra bucks from those patrons who want to pay the extra amount; however, you may be doing yourself a disservice in the long run, in exchange for some short-term profit. People who choose not to pay the extra $$$ may slam your event and complain to everyone they know, which could hurt the bottom line over time. Just something to think about…

If you were worried about the cost of the glasses why wouldn't you just figure the cost into the ticket price to see the attraction to begin with? Don't you usually figure in your costs to operate your attraction when figuring your ticket price? I know I do.

I think charging for the glasses is rather tacky and I've only seen it done at amusement park haunts. It really makes the customer feel nickel and dimed after all the other costs they had to pay.
We've built several 3D attractions and not one of the owners has charged for the glasses; they manage to reuse the cardboard ones several times before they have to be tossed.
