View Full Version : Let the renovations begin!

04-04-2009, 08:22 PM
We started our renovations for the 2009 season today. We are starting with our kitchen scene. Today we added the nasty, moldy, bloody, cockroach infested tile wainscot and molding. More work tomorrow!

I'll post more pics as we progress.

Today we worked on our portrait gallery/Pepper's Ghost hallway. We updated the wainscot with the "shields" and added molding. Eventually the entire area will be repainted and aged/dirtied down.

More next weekend.

We did a portrait hallway but used old frames/pictures found in a room of junk that was left over from the old dept. store that used to be where our haunt is now.
Can you say upgrade?

Great Stuff Kevin!

It was awesome to see you at TW and clarify what was going on... I wish you nothing but good luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Just for idle curiosity..what/where do you get your inspiration for decorating ?
I have gotten alot of mine from actual terrible old homes that I have been in.
I used to fix furnaces for people, I saw how they live(d).

Is that plexiglass with a body prop behind it in the coffin? Just wondering.

05-01-2009, 03:29 PM
Awesome man!

Are you referring to the Pepper's Ghost Hallway photo? If so, that is the glass combiner that reflects the image of the ghost. It is actually a framed sliding glass window.

05-01-2009, 05:43 PM
I think he was talking about the third picture (far right) at the top of page 3.

05-01-2009, 07:04 PM
That's just an optical illusion. There once was a body in the coffin and paint was sprayed around it. What you are seeing is the outline that was left when the body was removed. Sorta like a stencil in reverse.

Nothing too exciting this weekend. We rebuilt our freezer scene and moved the Brain Surgery dude into the library.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Pepper's ghost hall. I'm a sucker for a good pepper's ghost effect. Glad to see some of the people at the haunt already getting excited about it this early.

I needed a roof extention to cover a new item outside. Do I really want to spend that much money? (Who does?)
I decided I could more easilly just raise a roof I already have that is portable and on wheels. It's corrugated galvenised steel on a steel tube framework, supported by a steel tube frame on lockable casters. I just cut 4 pieces of 1" galvenised pipe, drill 8 holes and extend the thing to do what I need done.
Extra added savings, it's not adding to my real estate taxes because it's on wheels!
Property taxes are something to think about because they Never go away, they just keep increasing.
21yrs. ago my expenses looked like this: Electric-$20. a month-now $145
Water & Sewer $25 a mon.-now $65.
phone-"0"- now $175, min.
Gas-$400yr.-now $1,400
Prop. Taxes $250 yr. -now $2,300.
Ahh! Those good ol days!
"Where"? Does my $ Go?

A few more pics of the nursery/closet and the portrait hallway.

How much of a makeover did your lighting get in the haunt this year?

For some reason it the lighting looks so much better in the pics than what I recall touring the haunt in the past.

10-05-2009, 04:24 PM
We've switched a lot of our lighting from colored incandescent over to 18-LED spot lights from Minions Web (and we are still using a couple of strobes LOL!)

10-05-2009, 07:50 PM
The spots show really well in photos. Can't wait to see how they are live. (With your mention of strobes, I'm sure you remember I'm not a big fan of those.)

Also looking forward to your pepper's ghost. I thought it was a crime that none of the commercial haunts in the area had this classic effect.
