How is this any different than what anyone can find through this online agent? What is the HHA benefit?

05-23-2009, 10:52 AM
Of all the benefits of joining the HHA, the healthcare info we provided is not a member only benefit. After many long months of research these options are what we determined are exellent options for ALL haunters to consider, not just for HHA members. There are many options available, and ehealthinsurance is the the top rated online provider, check it out you can get great deals on coverage!

Healthcare is undergoing many changes at this very moment, it is our ultimate goal to coordinate an HHA group healthcare plan, but current conditions within the healthcare system prohibits this because we just dont have a large enough number of interested people quite ready to take part at this time, among other circumstances. As things in the healthcare arena change as they are now rapidly, we will be monitoring it to create new opportunities for this industry.

Ken, both associations have their Healthcare info on their websites and as an industry we should all be appreciative that there is movement on this front and options and info available for all.

Let me attempt to explain the underlying question here because it really an interesting topic.

In my opinion there are two sorts of things an association should attempt to do in a broad sense.

1) Develop Member Benefits - I.e. Things that help ONLY members

2) Develop plans that help the ENTIRE industry. I.e. things that help EVERYONE.

Now let’s discuss Healthcare:

. HHA wanted first and foremost to provide Healthcare options to the industry and HHA members. Allan whose wife is actually in the Healthcare industry spearheaded this, and after countless hours of work discovered that such a plan would be VERY difficult to impossible to create at this time. He did uncover the options presented above. These options were shared NOT only with HHA members but with the ENTIRE industry. At our roll out meeting we told everyone to explore this option if it helped them, and that being an HHA member was not necessary. WE were honest about it.

So could you discover the above options in 5 minutes…yes and NO. Allan on behalf of HHA spent a huge amount time on this project and that means a lot! That means you have an un involved person who knows what he is talking about telling you this IS a good option - and you could ask Allan in depth and on these forums and I am sure he would be happy to tell you all about it.

Also Allan discovered the Option #2 something folks might never have thought of and overlooked.

How does that help you as an HHA Member? Well for one you know HHA is working for the GREATER GOOD, and by being a member you are supporting THAT sort of a philosophy. And you know HHA is trying to get something even BETTER perhaps just for members in the future; that you are helping this project evolve.

Member benefits are great, (1) but a big part of joining something is believing in WHAT they are doing in the big picture (2).
Now let’s talk about Safety Programs:

First some history. Years ago ANOTHER ORGAINIZATION (myself included) developed haunter manuals and safety manuals. These were a MEMBER benefit. It was noted that perhaps SAFTEY information would be a GREATER BENEFIT if it was SHARED with all haunters (Safety education is critical to us all!) The board of THE OTHER ORGANIZATION at the time disagreed, because the quest was always Member Benefits (1) and not the greater good (2).

What is a better approach to safety education…? Keeping it in a program for its members only or creating an outreach to those who really NEED the help?

The answer is obvious.

Member benefits are important; things like subscriptions, Haunt Listings, Vendor Discounts etc have great value.

But the REAL meat of an organization is what good it will do for an entire industry, including all the people who are NOT members.

HHA is focused on BOTH issues, and if we find something best presented to all haunters including non-members we will offer it up happily and for free, just as we will continue to develop VALUE for our own members.

First of all, Thank you Ben for helping to clarify things. My quest for knowledge for Healthcare was a personal one before joining HHA, this was something I would be needing down the road and it was a natural progression to continue my work as I became more involved with the HHA.

Because the HHA and my research was indeed for the greater good, this became very important to me and made my wife Jill and my own research all that more rewarding. Is this a final solution? I am confident in saying No, but it is a fantastic start and good for our industry? Absolutely yes.

I'm am glad to see others are looking into this. Mike, since you also showed an interest if you have any suggestions or options please contact me to discuss we are looking for members to assist with making our association and our industry better. I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon. (email below)

Also, as Ben said I would be happy to answer any questions here on the forum regarding Healthcare and the current roadblocks that exist within that industry. Feel free to email me directly with any specifics and I would be happy to help!
