    dot room

    I tried searching for this but "dot" was under the minimum word length.

    Has anyone tried the dot scene in their haunt? This is where you paint all the walls black, and paint flouresent colored dots on the walls. The actor is wearing a costume with the same pattern on it and moves throughout the scene.

    Yes, I do a variation on it where I use strobing UV.

      You must really have control of the size of those dots . I tried this in my underpants butt the dots got too big, illregular and downright sloppy!
      They wuz maximum scary though!

          You can use a dot room technique in many dfferent ways. You can use masks painted and mounted on the walls and the actor wears the same mask.
          You can use whole skeletons with the actor wearing a skeleton attached to a body suit in front of him.

          This is the idea behind our Bunrakboo Puppet aka Heart Attack Special. Several zombies in a room. All are static but one or two and they stay still until just the right moment.

          There are so many different ways to pull off the Dot room effect and you don't have to use Dots.

            We did it with a combination of dots and the fluorescent stars under a black light. The actor had a black suit with the stars and dots on it. Worked well but the suit was a pain to wash!

              One killer for you would be getting that black outfit dirty. You will want to leave that suit in the room as much as possible. You know how well lent shows up under blacklight on a black material. So try to keep that outfit as clean as possible.

                I used standard dotted walls and then I took the same dotted material and cut it into strips to hang throughout the room. Put the whole room under strobing blacklights and you get an awesome effect. It appears that the dots are floating. The actor can hide anywhere in the room without the need for a special costume because they are hidden by the strips.

                  I told John Burton about how I would do a dot room.
                  White walls, small black dots. People walk in, the strobe is slowly flashing...they cautiously edge into and across the room.
                  "I've seen this before, there's a guy all dressed, painted to match the wall, he scares us , grabs us, whatever? Where is he?"

                  " Well,I guess he was on his break we only have one more step and we are out of this room. "Clunk! Oops! What the heck was that we just tripped over?"

                  "It looks like some kind of dead dog?"
                  "A Dalmation!"

                        I guess this is the year for the dot room effect, because we have a new prop that also uses this technique. I personally think the standard dot room is over used more then the chainsaw, but like the chainsaw it works and newbies to a haunt always enjoys it.

                        One think many actors working that room do wrong is try to hide on a side wall instead of a wall in front facing the people. Nine times out of 10 you can see their body outline on a side wall and can be spotted immediately.

                        I agree with Kevin, it is a great effect but change it up, there are a million ways to do it.

                        I saw one really good use of this at the first Hauntcon at Morris’s haunt where they had a round room with a bunch of small aliens and one of the aliens comes off the wall and walks at you.

                        Our new prop that uses this should be released at Hauntcon, but I’ve got so much going on that it may not make it in time, if so, it will be at MHC.
