  • ***Fiberglass Trees*** HOW to ROT 2012

I have currently started on our 2012 haunted house, we have many things in store for this year..... The First Project I have selected is to build 7, 11' by 36" inch trees. These Trees were influenced by a post someone made on fiberglass Trees a few years ago on this forum. The RoT trees will be made out of 1/2" ply, ripped down 2x4's, Black Aluminum Screen material, Burlap, and Resin. I will try to complete a walk through photo process on creating these trees. I will try to get a camera to film some other how to's as well. But first thing first!

First step: Take 1/2 Inch plywood and draw a tree design on it for our case a 36" at base by 8' tree, the tree size varies with a wave like patterns.

second step: Take 1/2" ply and draw another tree designs on it, but make sure to cut this one tree in half to make two half pieces.... these pieces will go perpendicular to the piece cut in step one, with 1 3/4" wood reinforcement.

*Note Save Scraps to Be used as tree limbs* Also shown in the bottom pics are 3' tree segments that continue off of the 8' trees cut out of plywood, when attached they will make the 11' tree

        Tom..

You have to wait.. trees grow slowly. hahahha!
A high school kid once told the Business Class teacher he was going to make a lot of money, he would buy land, plant oak trees and sell them when they got grown. "Oak is worth a lot of money!"
(And you will then be 120 years old, yourself?) Enjoy your profit Great-great grandpa! hahaha!

          ............... LOL Jim!

Above is a quick demo on where the limbs are going to go, they will go up higher.... they will also be made to be de attached. This way they can fit through a 36 " door.....

Above you can see I sandwiched the plywood with ripped down 2x4's, and added on an extra 3 foot tree top section to the 8 foot tree. The ripped down 2x4's I used were 10 feet for these 11 foot trees....

Thanks Frank, keep them coming. This should be interesting.

I spent this season touring haunts in CA and had the pleasure of wandering into yours on the 15th. Busy enough that the actors were engaged but slow enough that I could realy drag my feet and enjoy. You have a great facility and a beautifully detailed set (especially the first half). Your actors are some of the best trained I have run across, timing was right on, operated in a safe manner(good hit and disapear), and always scared forward. One of the best operated shows I have seen. Top notch in CA. Would love to chat sometime.

Thank you very much for the complements Randy It means a lot. Next year if you come by tell the ticket booth people and I will give you a backstage tour and all, Its great to know you are enthusiastic about haunted houses like I am.

I am sorry i have not posed any updated photos on this forum of the Trees I have been building, I have been getting bogged down with work and starting another company. I just got a 55 gallon drum of resin and am getting ready to finish the branches. I will try to get back to this thread in a week or !

I hope you all are having a great year,

I currently switch my plan on the materials I am using on my trees due to time, and the look I am going for. I am now going to put aluminum window screen around the tree form, then shoot it with foam. Then I will Spray with a hopper synergy on the tree, then sculpt all the bark and the detail, along with using *Bark Rollers* to give it a bit more texture. All that has been done is the trees received branches and a good sturdy base for them to sit on.
