  • Spookywoods Cargo Plane Build

    Haunters,

As we are all in the final stretch of build season I thought I would share some of what we have been up to. Scaring an entire group of guest has been our goal and doing it unexpectedly worked great last year with our moving subway car. I wanted to take that idea and go bigger, so we built our own cargo plane to do just that. The plane is being built by Travis Crumbaker and the hydraulic control and audio setup by Kale Hamel. Our build crew, Tom Roever, Scott Edwards, Tony Forest, and Tom Benedict have built a neighborhood that this plane has crashed into and this is in the middle of Spookywoods. We rented a warehouse just to build the plane so Travis could work daily on this project, his kinda spoiled as the rest of the build crew has been sweating it in the hot NC summer in the woods.

This cargo plane will be mounted on top of a steel base built by our fabricator RJ Barber and controlled by hydraulic cylinders to replicate the last 30 seconds before the crash. Guest will enter up a ramp at the back of the plane. Cargo nets will be 3ft apart the length of the plane for guest to hold on to as the plane rolls left and right. The actor that controls the effect will be the “pilot” in the cock pit. Dark Tech Effects created the sound for the set that puts you in the middle of the disaster with real recordings of a mayday call and the engine exploding. The use of butt kickers and crackle effects and air blowing throughout the plane really puts you in the action. Stats: 30ft long, 10ft wide, 8ft tall, 9100lbs. Anybody want to put their order in now for a Cargo Plane Motion Set? Travis will need something to work on soon. I have created a page on our website if you want to keep up with more of this project. http://spookywoods.com/spookywoods-cargo.htm

              Really Scare Them!

Create a phoney celebrity , make an info-mercial staring them, bragging about how he bought and paid the best techinitions from every 3rd-world country to design and build this, and by the way, we are using a new experimental propulsion fuel for the first time too!
Then everyone follows the celebrity on to the plane, at the last minute he screams something crazy and bails out!
(This might be a good time to re-enact the scene where W.C. Fields jumps out of the airliner trying to catch up to the bottle of whiskey a woman threw out of the window!)
You might even have bambo seats just like some of the very first airliners had! (SO "Retro"!)

I went up to Spookywoods this past week and saw this up close and personal. It is even bigger than it looks in the photos. It's really well done and I can't wait to see it in action...

                  Plane assembly in Spookywoods

After a very time consuming move, we finally got her onsite! Today we installed the mount onto the concrete pad and the cockpit was moved into the woods. See all the photos at this page. http://spookywoods.com/spookywoods-cargo.htm

It was an AMAZING effect !! Definitely a step up the innovative ladder. I thought the cop right before the plane was real (he didn't break character at all) !! The subway was still really great too. Really intensive movement. One last thing I love was the moving floors in the vortex tunnel. AWESOME !!

Your haunt actually contains a section where you put your guests through a simulated plane crash?! How are you not on the Top 13 list?! Kudos on your awesome plane!

                              Top 13

Thanks for the comments guys. This was our first hydraulic effect we ever attempted. It was a lot of fun to see people scream once it started to tilt. We seen more than one group exit the plane with big wet spots! It was really freaking people out that are afraid of flying.

We have been in the top 13 list before, it's much appreciated when it happens.
