How many people do you have helping you? how big is the garage is it a double garage or single do you have a storyline built out or are you just going with popular known horror villans? are you buying props or making props? I would start off with a drawing of the garage and map out a path and see how much area you have to work with in and out of the garage.

We have 6 people including my self i have enough room for 5 scenes .I have all the walls put up and scenes pretty much set up the first scene is a couch with a dummy on it with my son dressed up as a dummy also so he can jump at the people as they walk by the second scene is a butchers table with fake heads and and other gory stuff and a couple winding paths and you end up in a cemetery scene with a person in a casket and a zombie grounds keeper at the end a you encounter herb the killer clown

              Ahh no problems then.
Scare acting it is important to stay in character at all times. Watch and learn you ques find from where you are the best way to id someone is coming.
See if you have spots to escape to if so once you scare them escape out of view. The reson for this is in most cases your only scary for a few seconds then you have nothing left but if you escape and the group is large you can get them more than once. most places have several spots you can scare from set up primary scare spots that you should always hit and then secondary that are bonuses if you can get them and not miss the next group at your primary scare. Set up zones there should always be a spot where you as an actor stop and reset otherwise you are intruding on the next actors zone. The most important part is have fun. Alot of it will be trial and error. if you have more than one person in a room you can do a decoy scare where they see one charact but he is just a destraction for the other actor to get the group once he does the decoy has a chance to scare them because their attention is off of him. Being a home haunt I would say keep and eye out for the little ones. if they seem really scared they may be the only ones I break character for because I want them to love haunts as they get older not hate them due to mental scars.

Alot of these are more for the big haunts but they are basic ideas that can apply to home haunts just as easy. Alot of the guys running the big haunts started out on a home haunt. The biggest thing is to have fun we all do this because we love it.

Hope that helps some. Oh if you ever decide to go pro Allen Hopps has some great Videos for haunt actors that many haunts use for their training.
http://www.stiltbeaststudios.com/ also check out the actors hang out section lots of advice.
