I buy my gloves from Home Depot. The nice, construction gloves. The newer ones, with padding and double layers in the palms, and rubber on the knuckles. I then buy the electrical conduit elbows in 3 sizes, and large fender washers. Gorilla glue them on the gloves so they're in the correct spot, and comfortable to wear. I buy skateboarding kneepads from wal-mart, and I made my own boots. Bought some Demonia boots and implanted some steel toes to the outside, with a hammer, rivets, and gorilla glue. I've used the same boots 3 years in a row, and I usually need to buy a new set of pads, and build some new gloves every year. But i'm constantly on the pavement, as i'm the only slider at our haunt.
hey Freak, your gloves spark right? And do you slide on asphalt?
Yes, I slide on asphalt. It's not the Netherworld, smooth top asphalt either, it's quite a few years old, but it's still compact enough not to shred my gear. And as far as sparks go, yes...they spark right. Along with my toes. I don't use any flint on the palms, because I think it creates too large of an object on your palm to be comfortable. Steel on asphalt works just fine. I get remarks all night long about "How did you get the sparks to come from your hands like that?" so, i'm pretty sure they do. I'm too "into" the moment to pay attention to what my hands are doing. It's a natural thing to me now, and I love it. My other haunters at the house think i'm nuts for doing it again. 3rd year sliding for me, and every year I prepare for one single bad fall. Usually i'll go through the house a couple times, and forget to check my gear before I take off running. What ensues, is one hell of a roadrashed kneecap. Haha My knees, hands, face, toes, shins...they are fine. Now...this year, since i'm not wearing tall boots i'm going to buy some shin guards to turn sideways on my calfs. That way I have something hard to separate my flesh from the asphalt in that area. My slides are usually downhill for about 10 to 20 ft. Depending what part of the hill i'm on. So, i'm putting a lot of use into my gear and a lot of proven confidence in it. You use the same thing, I think you'll be fine.
