  • volunteers and hiring?

when do you guys start avertising for volunteers and hiring actors and other postions for your haunt?

Start looking for volunteers now. For every 4 people that say they want to volunteer, only one will actually mean it.
Don't do any hiring until the month before you open.

If you don't have one already a Myspace page for your event will help bring in volunteers, at least it did for us.....

As for recruiting, most haunt people I meet are recruiting for their event every day of the year. Trying to get volunteers close to October can be a nightmare for your event staff and the existing volunteers. The sooner you can get some solid people lined up the better.

If you have a choice to either hire someone who already has a job(or two?) or instead hire somebody who is unemployed but living on their parent's couch, hire the person who is already working.
The one living on the couch already has figured out life so he needs almost no income and probably doesn't care about too much and will not show up once you pay them, even if you just pay them for one night!
The working person already knows that you have to show up when you are supposed to and do what is expected of you to get paid and keep the job.

We recruit year round and were all about vollunteer! It's the pride man, not the money! Hell i would pay somebody to let me scare people!

Keep in mind you need to train people unless your going to provide everything for them, this takes time even if your good at it.

Myspace groups do work good for this, find all the high school, college groups and horror groups in your area that you can find and spam the hell out them, post lots of pics this draws interest, then set a date to hold a meeting to lure them in.
I have found one thing very effective to do during the meeting, if you have a kick butt make up artist have that person do make up on a few people, they will love this and want to learn how.Now you have them hooked. After thir first night of scaring people you won't be able to get rid of them!

As part of the "makeup people" for our event I can agree 100% with post on getting good makeup people. Actors seem to have a LOT more fun in makeup than mask. I think its the psychological side of seeing the "me" but not the "me I know". It really seems to pump the actors up about a million times more than just a mask will. Maybe its just the presentation, someone spent time on them so they feel they have changed. Where a mask is often thrown at you with a costume in such an "its nothing special" way.... Again, Myspace should help you out there too. There are some decent makeup groups and you might get lucky and hook up with someone with a high level of skill in your area....
