  • Caves n things...

Not sure if this is the place to post but here it goes. I am opening up another retail location and I am wanting to theme it out as a jungle type theme. I need ideas on making a couple of large trunk jungle trees and hang a canopy from the ceiling. Also I want to make some rock scapes and have a cave like structure in one section that will hold a display case.

Foam or concrete?? Not really sure which to use and which is the easiest to work with. Any ideas o sites I can go to for how to's. If anything this will be practice for my pro haunt that I hope to open 2011. Oh and the ceiling is only 9ft.

    Thanks in advance

foam!! Check out Larry's posts from last year on getting the Darkness ready for the transworld tour. there is also a great one from Spooky woods about the castle facade they did. All are on this forum. Search under foam and some great stuff will come up.

      Ronnie,

there are lots of ways to do this.

Are you more so looking to build or are you considering hiring it out?

You can sculpt it out of foam, and coat it
Or you can build an understructure in the approx shape. Spray foam it, possibly carve, and coat it.

There are tons of different materials you can use to coat it, but it sounds like you need something that will make it water tight in areas. And make it super strong in case people come in contact with it.

Thanks Allan...I kept up with Larry's progress last year and went to see it at Transworld last year and it truly is awesome. My only problem with using the foam blocks to carve is where to buy them. I'm not quite sure the under structure..did he build a frame of 1x1 or of the like and attach thinner pieces of foam or did he just use thick pieces of foam and carve out? I would ask him but knowing how busy he is and how I'm really just a nobody in the business (right now anyway) I doubt he would answer me.

Gore...I have seen somewhere that they framed a loose understructure and covered it with wire and sprayed the foam over that. Then hard coated it. I thought that this way would be a good way to go but can't seem to find that info anymore. I would really like to do this project myself..I may or may not save money doing it myself, but it would give me practice for when I do open my haunt.

I have a tiki hut theme in my first store and I just built tiki huts over my display cases and put reed all around the room. Now that I have a little time and a bigger spot with the new store I want to go all out.

Here is a lnk to my website to give you an idea of the atmosphere I want.

Once again thanks for your time.

My local is powerfoam insulation in Midlothian TX. but when Im trying to find one for someone else I use this site.

                http://www.epsmolders.org/2.html

Expanded poly styrene is the white foam, most of the companies are pretty old school so the phone book is often as useful as the internet. this sites pretty good, email or call the local company as some of the companies listed are construction as opposed to distribution. Its a pretty good resource.

That is a great idea. Didn't even think of that.

Well it doesn't look like I'll be needing it for awhile anyway. I went to the landlord to sign the lease he wasn't in but went ahead and paid three months rent up front and figured that I would go around and get the lights, phone and all the normal stuff taken care of. I stopped of by the police department that is right next door to the water dept. The dispatcher said she has been getting phone calls about me for the last 10 min. I haven't even been in town but for maybe 20.

Long story short went back to the landlords after getting everything turned on and he said his other tenants don't want us there. So much for another store.

Got to love small towns. Brite side.... more money towards new haunt.

another money saving tip, I go to the big lumber yards that stock there stuff outside and buy there aged lumber for 25-50 dollars a unit and some times plywood. The last two years ive had a couple truck loads droped off at the haunt.
