We experimented with painting pvc a brown color and wait til it dries. Spray with glue, then taking cereal like corn flakes, crushing them up and sprinking on followed by a coat of paint. Nice thing is after your done with the pipes you havea great breakfast ready and waiting...

these guys sell aproduct called scenic rust. Basicall its a poaint with iron fillings in it and then you spreay it with an agent that makes it rust. Very good stuff.

This is a similar product from BITY mold supply ( A super haunt friendly place)

For just iron pipes (areas without heavy rust) I really like the "hand hammered) paints they are by rustoleum here is a link.

Minwax spray stain it's in a yellow can with a black lid, Home depot carries it pretty much everyone does but try using Red Mahogany. I use it all the time, I just paint the pipe or what ever it is the color I want it then go back and you can mist it on to look how rusty you need it works great in a haunt and it's to bad 4 wise.

The link above this tread is actually good, normally you see bad stuff on that forum i will give it props this time.

Using ground up food products work, but There are paint texture additives that you can pick up at the store, just ask the clerk.

If you want it to have big flakes falling off, let paint dry in the bottom of a large plastic container about 1/8th inch thick, then cut it up and apply paint to object and stick on.. This takes time but is a cool trick.

normally for rust painting you apply a coat of gray, sponge on some dark brown, go over with a lighter brown amber, Mix a little red with the brown for a redder look, then apply a few dabs of black on the piece. You can accomplish many looks this way.

There is another method dealing with water, you can only do this to an object when it is flat on the ground. This method is the most realistic. After The piece is painted gray and dry you splash some water on it. You then add veins of all the colors listed above. This effect is great for sheet metal rust, it looks like the real deal.

Also keep in mind if you are rusting PVC pipes..... SPRAY IT WITH PLASTIC SPRAY PAINT PRIMER... This will make the Acrylic paint stick better and not flake off like I see in so many haunted houses. ALSO TRY TO USE BLACK PVC, This way if some paint happens to flake off you will not notice it compared to the Radioactive white!

I Went trough the time to rust these pipes and I ended going over them for a frozen look with snow and icicles.

              Best OF LUCK!!

When Kathy and I visited Eddie Eddie Dupay (Chamber of Horror in Louisiana), I remember commenting on the rusted bars that he had. The looked very realistic. Like the metal was flaking off. If I remember correctly he said he mixed in some mulch into the paint to get that effect. You can hit him up on Facebook and ask.

                      Spray Paint Primer

Various cans of supposidly the same color might not be when buying red primer, I experimented with it and buy a few cans and the slightly different shades make for easier rust painting.
Of course different brands of red primer will look different too.
The main large flakes I have ever seen coming from an old pipe were paint flakes from someone painting the pipe , so those flakes wouldn't be rusty looking usually.
15 of my adult yearswere spent ripping out and working on rusty pipes for steam, plumbing....
Anybody put fake asbestos insulation around their phoney pipes to make it more dangerous?
Spray paint cardboard with flat white paint, install if so you are looking at the end of the cardboard seeing that sort of a honeycomb look. Wrap it with gauze, there you go!

I took a wet rag and put some thick light brown paint and streaked it up and down the wall, then did the same with a dark brown. Then spritzed it with a little water from a weed sprayer.

Kinda sucked, after going trough all that work i ended up making the room look frozen with snow and icicles... Pictures are a bit washed out sorry, also what you don't see is that the fake snow has a shine to it like its been iced over, really cool to see in life.
