Im looking for some ideas for a haunted trail on a half mile walk. This is not a hayride.

I on a haunted trail. I assume the ideas you are looking for are artistic in nature as opposed to technical.
    Here are some theme ideas
    Werewolves
    Zombie hillbillies
"haunted woods" trees come to life
    Have a giant spider theme
    Ghosts (old fashioned but doable)
    Insects
    A swamp hag
    Trolls
I did a lord of the rings orc theme one year.

thanks for the tips, one of our big issues last year was that we had so much light rain which made it slick and diamond dry and straw would just cake on the top layers. We are working on making some wooden walkways so hopefully that will keep the rain issue down to a minimal

Make sure that you put something on the wood as they to become very slick in the rain especially treated lumber.

On particularly bad seasons I have used mulch on my trail, that works really good.

You could put in gravel on the walkways.
