Yes! def use the social networking! After all...it is free! BUT you can go one step further with facebook and place ads on facebook that are seen by people in an area that you tell fb to generate the ads on...what ages will see them etc...much like what google does with google ads...

              myspace and facebook

We are using both. Seems from data I could find that FB is 4-5 times more popular, but myspace is right exactly where our demographics are at. I think that if you filter out the FB demographics, myspace holds it own.

During TW HHA forum, there was a discussion and the majority that spoke talked up FB and said they felt myspace had become outdated. I think that myspace is still very popular with the customers we look for. I have noticed that about 80-90 % of the accounts are still being kept up to date and signed in.

Since TW I have done some homework and got the zip codes of the area within 50 miles from us. I have sent out 4900 friend requests to 18 year olds with a simple message. The message is "Inviting you to be a friend so I can keep you up to date on the Haunted Hotel-13th Floor in Huntington. Check in this fall if you dare!" and been accepted by 1200. A 25% success rate. I have about 2/3 of the 210 zipcodes done. Some of the biggest pop areas yet to be done, though.

My personal requests have been limited several times since myspace has a limit of about 400 requests per day. I have a spreadsheet detailing how many are in the 5 mile range of the zip and how many I was able to send. Two years ago we had a page set up and bought a friend adder software package but was deleted within ten days.

I plan to try to also do the 19, 20, & 21 year olds in the same zips. I have the process down and sit with the laptop at night while watching tv and do the requests. I also have some IM requests asking who I am. The account is for Eldon so I reply that it is "Eldon from the Haunted Hotel-13th Floor in Huntington, at our service." They IM sometimes and ask how scary it is. A few seem to IM me whenver they see me on and make some chit chat.

We also have a facebook page for the workers, for Eldon the Bellhop, one of our main characters. The Haunt itself has a "FAN" page from my personal page and we are running an ad with $ 10 per day limit. I think we have spent about $ 70 in 8 weeks and have gotten about 125 fans.

Bottom line is that it takes mostly time. We will also use them to announce casting calls, special announcements, and regular updates. Another I idea I have for it is to get posters up in the area high school and colleges by giving fans and friends tickets for putting up the posters. After the announcement, we will have a meeting to distribute posters and taling about what we need. Then they send me a phone pic proving the posters are up.

My goal is to kickstart the first two weekends and using these can't hurt.

I have tried to contact MySpace in regards to the HHA forum at TW and the myspace pages that have been deleted abruptly. They do not respond to customers very well, but I will continue to try.

I use Facebook mostly as MySpace is in this weird place with it trying to decide how it wants to try to compete in the marketplace. They are trying to figure out someway to keep it relevant with the music industry, but I don't think it's working out well for them.

As for the customer base and what they use, this past season I worked with a local haunted house putting together a market study about their customer base. I was able to get a large sample of their overall attendance and one of the many questions was asked about their social networking preferences. I found that depending on the age group, that dictated what social network they were primarily using. But I found that overall, 90% had a active Facebook profile, 63% had a active MySpace profile, and 57% used Twitter. So I would say that if you are limited in your ad budget and had to choose which platform to do some serious grass roots campaigning and ad buys, I would go with Facebook.

Also, don't under estimate the power of Twitter. Some people don't bother with it and I think that's a mistake. Where Facebook and MySpace are more of a active experience and time consumer, Twitter is designed to be more of a passive social experience. Something your checking when your out and about waiting in line at someplace. Try to use Twitter to tweet about live events or things that are going on during your season. Encourage people to follow you and offer them rewards for doing so in the form of discounts or maybe a price giveaway. If I was having a slow night at a haunt and I spent the previous months building a strong online social and twitter base, I would send out a tweet that say's something like "Attention Minions!! Between 9 - 10:30p, Print this tweet or show it on your mobile phone at the door and get half off your ticket!!" Some customers at half is better than no customers at full price. And if they are out driving around with their friends, sitting at home on the couch messing with their iPhone / iPod, or standing in line at your competitors haunt, when they see that tweet that may get them to be converted into an impulse customer and come to your haunt when they might not have.

I always try to remind my clients, just because you don't use social networks doesn't mean that your customers don't. Go where your customer are and use the tools that they are using!
