I like the shaker cans better than any big clumbsy gas can. But sorry Im not much for both. Ya they can work but personally Im not much for them. Maybe for a new actor or someone with less talent scaring maybe. At least with a shaker can you can conceal it better in your hand than a gas can. And I am talking the gallon cans.

The only place I have seen the gas cans effective is in jump out scares and jungle suit/room set ups.

I'm a big fan of good noisemakers. Although most of my haunt experience has been behind the scenes, I like to jump in and scare when I can. However, I'm just not a good actor - at least not vocally. I can do set lines just fine, but improv scares me even more than clowns do, lol! I can totally kill with mannequin scares, though, and usually don't need any noise for that, but it can be a bonus in some scenes. Also, noisemakers are perfect for certain camo scares (example: ivy probably shouldn't be talking, lol!)

The key, as several people have stated, is not to rely on too many noisemakers. You want strong actors wherever you can have them, but weaker actors can be in certain spots with a noisemaker and do just fine. They can also help new people who are still learning.
