    N.Y. Fire Shield

We are using it on everything at Folklore, because that is what we used on the panels that our fire marshal approved during our sample testing. After trying to burn a plywood panel for five minutes that was coated in NY fire shield black paint, the fire marshal finally took out a blow torch and said he was going to make it burn. It didn't work! After torching it, the flame extinguished. Good stuff!

Borax/Boric Acid solution. Our Fire Marshall approves it and it's a fraction of the expense.

It is officially recommended as a fabric treatment, but he is fine with us spraying wood wall panels, etc. with it. The issue with it being used on materials other than fabric is longevity, but we reapply annually..

      Textile Fire Retardant Treatments
Many chemicals used as fire retardants can be toxic, difficult to apply, or can significantly alter the quality of the fabric. The 1977 edition of NFPA 701 include some uncomplicated sample formulas:

Formula 1: Borax - 6 parts, 6 lbs, Boric acid - 5 parts, 5 lbs, Water - 100 parts, 12 gallons. Steep fabric in cool solution until impregnated. Heavy applications by spray or brush are usually reasonably effective. Repeat if necessary. This is good for theater scenery fabric, and recommended for rayon and natural fabrics. Yields a 8 - 12 % weighting.

Formula 2: Borax - 7 parts, 7 lbs, Boric acid - 3 parts, 3 lbs, Water - 100 parts, 12 gallons. Water can be varied according to the absorptive capacity of the fabric. For rayon and sheer fabrics, these same amounts of borax and boric acid can be used with 17 gallons of water. Hand-wring for an 8 - 10% weighting on fabric.

Flexibility and softness will be retained without dustiness, and microorganism growth is also prevented.

I am not sure about laboratory testing, but our tests with applying a small torch and removing it have been that the flame extinguishes as soon as the source is removed as required.

The borax solution was a first solution for me because it was in the "how to build a successful haunted house" book. We ended up ordering another solution though. It should arrive in a few days. We didn't go with NYFS, don't ask me why. When I find the name, I'll update you.

I'm new here, so this has probably been mentioned, but these guys claim the lowest price (for their concentrate FF6), and has been approved by our fire marshal, which btw poo-pooed home brew formulas primarily due to my liability exposure- which I can't argue about!
