  • LED's

I bought a bunch of LED's christmas lights last year for cheap. Got them after the holidays. Has anyone torn these things apart and remade them to use in your haunt? I have boxes and boxes of blue, red, white and yellow. The transformers are attached. I would love to be able to turn these into mini spots. Thanks for any help.

    sue,
they really are not bright enough for mini spots, I tried them when I started making my own. For mini spots you need "super bright" LED's. Have I sent you the doc on making your own?
They can be used as good mood and accent lighting though if you hide the strand and just have the glow coming from behind something.
The red and yellow could be great flickering in a fireplace set.

              LED lights that work

I know the x-mas lights seem like a great way to save a bit of cash but the truth is they just aren't designed for your trying to do with them. They will work for some accent lighting as some have mentioned and as a lighting designer who has worked for years in both haunts and professional theater I can tell you the key to lighting on a budget is not necessarily spending very little money, just spending it wisely on flexible equipment that can be used for all sorts of things. I will be posting a new article on our website in the next week or two (i'll come back here and drop a link) that will cover lighting budgets and how to stretch them. Until then check out the lights available at www.ETHEREALFX.com they are being adopted by a lot of haunters as well as big theme parks and such who would like to bring the small LED fixtures to a set and still have all the control one may need to synch them up with sound or actor ques via DMX control.

With lights like that I normally end up using them as a back lighting for props I want to give a bit more light to. Its easier and faster for me to just add them instead of getting with the construction crew to move lights around. I have been at four haunts where I have stressed moving lights for safety reasons and it never happens. Ever. So yea, keep them around because you never know when you will need a bit of low lighting in an area at the last minute. And most of the time there easy to hide.

                      not at all Dark,
I just share info. Im not omnicient by any means, I try tons of stuff and share what works, Lots does not. This board should be about sharing and transfer of knowledge from everyone, no one person has all the haunt answers and it certainly isint me. The way we interpret and filter the knowledge we gain here and elswhere through our own styles is what makes all of our haunts unique.
What I am good at is finding something that works for me and passing the basics of it on so others can put their twist on it and make it their own.
