  • Rand McNally's Top Ten Haunted Houtses for 2010

Congras to all on the list!

    1. ARX MORTIS
    Killen, Alabama
If a trip to the dentist requires Valium, this 50,000 square foot recreation of a 1940′s clinic and sanitarium is not for you.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2. THE BEAST
    Kansas City, Missouri
From the “haunted House Capital of the World” comes the largest haunted house in America, The Beast. This plays off almost every known phobia: Fear of Heights? Check. Walking home alone at night? Check. Deranged rabid animal attacks? Check.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. SCARECO
    Tarpon Springs, Florida
Stumble in darkness, visit a butcher shop where the pigs are in charge, get completely disoriented in a defunct disco’s maze. Staying true to its roots, this is a volunteer-run house where many of the proceeds go to fund local schools and programs.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    4. EREBUS
    Pontiac, Michigan
This is the 10th anniversary for the world’s largest “walk-through” haunted attraction. With 100,000 square feet and four stories of surprise and gore, this is ideal for teenagers who will love the long lines and loud music.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    5. GHOSTLY MANOR
    Sandusky, Ohio
By remaining open all year they can offer things no one else can such as elaborate design details and year-round actors with impeccable timing–both key parts of the fear experience. In the evening, the facade is widely considered to be one of the best in the haunt business with a CO2 fire breathing dragon.

    6. RUBY FALLS HAUNTED CAVERN
    Chattanooga, Tennessee
Enter a cavern 250 below ground where victims of the Cerebrus Virus are dwelling, ready to scare all. Think: Deliverance meets Twelve Monkeys.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    7. HORSEMAN’S HOLLOW
    Sleepy Hollow, New York
Literature fans have a brand new place to experience fear. Horseman’s Hollow is a walk through trail graphically illustrating what might happen to townsfolk driven to madness by a headless horseman. Even better, it’s located in the actual town where Washington Irvington’s famous novel is set, Sleepy Hollow.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    8. BELCOURT CASTLE
    Newport, Rhode Island
See what the lifestyles of rich and famous spirits are like by taking an evening ghost tour of this 60 room “summer cottage” built for the son of August Belmont (of the Belmont Stakes fame).
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    9. JAILER’S INN
    Bardstown, Kentucky
Fraternize with some of the felons who met their end by gallows rope. They come back to haunt visitors staying in an actual cell of what was once the Old Nelson County Jail in operation from 1797 to 1987. Visitors can skip the slumber but still get the spirits by going on a Bardstown Ghost Trek. Patti Starr, the tour’s leader and winner of the Top Ten Ghost Hunters for the past 4 years, swears you’ll encounter at least one spirit as you travel through jail and dungeon.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    10. SKELETOWN at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
    Indianapolis, Indiana
Bring the babies. The youngest visitors get to experience safe scares in what might be America’s only haunted house with Lights-On Hours. Not-too-scary thrills include themed rooms like Bone-Crusher Stadium, the Art-trocious Museum, the Heartless Hotel, the Scaregrounds, the Zombie Zoo, and the Spine-Chilling Speedway. Older children can go through during Frightening Hours (lights off but still geared to children).
