  • Source for cast iron doors

I am looking for a set of cast iron boiler doors for a new scene. Any recommendations, haven't really seen any on Craigslist or eBay lately. Is there a source for vacuform or resin replicas?

    I saved mine!

When I tore out the old boiler that was in this house, then a few yrs. ago I installed them on my faux-bolier that actually is my return air drop for my hot air furnace.
With the price of scrap steel having been so high I would think such an item would be harder to find anywhere.
I saw a picture of a fake cast-iron radiater at a movie studio in England. One guy picked it up and carried it like it weighed almost nothing, a very good job at reproducting the real thing. If a person had one of these it could be hung above the path from the ceiling (as was commonly done, then have it seem to come loose at one end as the 5 pounds of foam and latex swung at them.. then stopped short of coming within range.
Some of the cast iron boiler doors would have the name of the furnace company cast in large letters, then the small "glass" observation window made from izenglass (sp) and a small knob that controlled some small shutter type air vents and of course the noticable hinges and lever to lock it tightly closed were all the main features of such a furnace door. I also saved some old boiler gauges brand new in the box from my Dad's sale, pretty nice "Steam-punk"-ing items, I have used some already on my Fear-Degausser machine.
The older model boilers also has a door down low for shovelling in the coal./taking out the ashes.= three doors total.

I had the same problem, couldn't find any.
I took pictures of Larry's at the Darkness
      and replicated them in wood.

      Here's a couple pics.
      Couldn't find a suitable latch.
Created one from a hair brush from the Dollar store!

      Used Modern Masters rust paint.
One door is closed with flicker bulbs behind
      second door is cracked open.

          Checkout ebay.
I just looked and they have a bunch under furnace door or boiler door.

Biggest issue with using a real door is shipping cost.
The real deal is HEAVY!!! So unless you are able to
buy one within driving distance, you're back to
            "recreating".

I'd try your local Craigslist first. Here in Vegas they
just don't have any old boilers...period!

Old swamp cooler equipment just isn't the same!!

it can be pricey, unless you make a mold from the original to make others.

              Just a thought

Here's the actual door (founf the pic), then the wood copy.
Decided not to spend too much time replicating the name,
people too far away to see.

That looks awesome! I scored a set of doors on eBay just now. So little time with being open for Hautcon. I offered half the listed price and the seller took it.

Im making a boiler door type thing for a part of a haunt of mine right now. I foam sculpted it and plan on hard coating it with easy flo 60. I will add the details soon (maybe tomorrow) I wil grab pics then too and post them here. Im pretty sure Im stealing the hair brush idea for the handle- thanks Rich!

Those are nice Brett. After season I will mold them if you want, that way you and I can make some more in the future.
