  • My FAVORITE Unconventional Prop Product....Tim Holtz Distress Powder

Having worked a lot professionally for companies in the scrapbooking industry, I had a grungy industrial kinda look to my work, much more art than slapping paper and photos down. Anyhow, Tim Holtz products by Ranger http://www.rangerink.com/products/pr..._distress.html really worked well with what I liked.

Now since shifting gears towards haunted house props, I still use a bunch of my scrapping products to create props. My favorite of all time is Tim Holtz distress embossing powder. It comes in a bunch of haunt worthy colors and you just sprinkle a little over wet paint and hit it with a heat gun for like a minute to set it in place. That easy. And the effects are so cool! Here's a plain old white all purpose tin from Oriental trading that I sprayed flat black, grunged up to look like rust with some copper and mossy green paint, sprinkled the powder over and it looks like real rust. Also sprinkled some of the peeling paint green on my doll for a moldy look.

Just thoguht I would share since it's probably not that well known but works great for weathered grungy effects and a little goes a long way!!!

I have a TON of his products, embossing powders, inks, paints, etc from my designing days... Never would have thought to use them in anything haunt related. I'm going to be looking at my stash in a whole new way now! Excellent idea, thanks!

I play aminiature wargame (shpould say I like to play- time to do it is scarce) called Warhammer 40K and for the model painting they use weathering powders also. But I make my own by putting pastel chalks and charcoal in a coffee grinder- works great and saves a ton of money.

                So your Innards

Think coffee is coming down the hatch and instead chaulky flavored coffee comes 'A-staining your intestines!?"

                  Hello All~

Verey nice distressing there Hauntedkimmy. Acctually we were looking at doing something like that fot this year for our yard haunt .. and that looks like it would "fit the bill" nicely.

As well as Allen's idea of pastel chalks.

I pop this idea to my co owner and well see where it goes

Thanks for the info, both Kimmy and Allen.

And to Jim thanks for the laugh as usual . you alsways seem to knwo how to put even a smirk on someones face, even early in the morning LOL .

                  Regards.

Ill build some things the year before and have it sit outside for 6 months or soo and it looks great and nasty. Dolls, furniture, some wood, the list goes on... The weather really puts a beating on things here in Chicago. Use good judgment on this method.

Yeah outside is a great way to distress, but I'm impatient, LOL!!!!

Cinnamon works good too for distressing for a rusty look. I've done that several times!!!
