  • Side Shows?

Side shows can be freaky I remember going to a fair and you pay $1 to see the worlds only snake head horse etc. Worlds smallest lady etc. How do you hire a sideshow for your event? Has anyone hired one? If so how did it go? SOme can be pretty freaky.

They can be freaky! There was one at the National Haunters Convention... I didn't have a chance to check it out, but he might do haunts, not sure. Here's a link for some more info.

We had a few members of this troupe (http://www.freakshowdeluxe.com/ ) come out for a couple years and put on shows. It was very well received and unfortunately, the haunt decided against bringing them back for whatever reason. People were still asking about them for years afterwards. Nicest bunch of people to work with and I still keep in touch with several of them...

          Build your own

By building your own side show, you have total control over content, size, theme, etc. and it gives you an opportunity to improve your bottom line. If you're stumped for ideas, contact someone like Rich Hanf. He's been doing this for a long time.

Side shows don't have to be big and you can use a side show at area fairs to help promote your main haunt attraction throughout the year. Incorporate some of your smaller rooms/scares in the side show promotional attraction. It's like having people physically walking through your 'teaser' commercial for your main attraction. If you can create a haunt, you can certainly create a side show.

A side show can create some good additional cash flow. I was just at a San Genero Feast and amongst the other vendors there were 3 or 4 "side show" style booths. Merely a small 12-16 ft cargo trailer, all painted up, added banners, lights and a sound system. One was to see snakes, one had monkeys, and a couple with oddities. They were only a dollar to go through and every one had a couple people in line!! This fair is like $800 a booth space so these guys are making money, one dollar at a time!!

Do one and then use the money to add on next year!! Create your own Figi Mermaid (remember Pirates of the Carribean comes out today!!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiji_mermaid you're a haunter, it's easy and fun!!

Also see about getting a side show troupe to perform. We had one last two years. They agreed to perform for tips, we gave them some free tickets and promoted them on our web site. (http://www.LasVegasHaunts.com scroll down on the Blog) They were fun to work with, but a little sick!! One ending bit had them ACTUALLY stapling the tip money to a girl!!! I asked what the "gimmic" was, she pulled the money off, wipped off small traces of blood saying "no gimmic. only hurts a little!!". I think I'll stick to haunting!!!

I am rebuilding and expanding my stage just to give tham a better appearance for this year. If you can't find a troupe that will work for tips, build a side show pirce or two and let THEM promote it in their shows. What ever the side show piece takes in they keep!!! You get cool line entertainment for the cost of the prop!! If if you are wooried they will make too much money, have it a profit split. If it's a slow night give them all the proceeds, busy night you get some money back to build a new exhibit!!

Damn...that IS a good idea!!! Just I'd better start looking for a small trailer!!! Craigslist here I come!!!
