  • How to advertise at a Zombie Walk

Our local Halloween store said some of us should dress up and attend the popular Zombie Walk this summer to advertise our Haunt.
I have never been to a Zombie walk. Does anyone have any clever advertising ideas to catch folks attention at a Zombie Walk? There may only be 8-10 people available from our Haunt on that summer day. Thanks

From experience of zombie walks I have done, unfortunately there is usually not a large crowd of onlookers that you would be able to advertise to like you would have for say a parade. However those doing the zombie walk would definitely be in your demographic. Pass out flyers or have them available to those participating, then have some with you on the walk in case there is an audience you can pass out to them, just stay in character and it will make an even better impression on what they can expect at your attraction. Or you can have zombies wearing one of your shirts if you have them, or a creative zombie with one of those oldschool double signs attached with rope that hangs on their shoulders over the front and back of them (im sure there is a name for that which I am forgetting)

Sandwich board is the name you're looking for

Also, talk to the coordinators of the walk and see if you could help sponsor it; then you could hang some banners for your haunt or be able to have your haunt name on the flyers advertising the event.

Some walks now have little vendor/booth areas that are set-up near the makeup stations at the gathering point. If your walk does this, see about costs and having some of your crew pass out flyers, sell some shirts, etc.

We've recently introduced our 'Walk About' line of props that are designed for just such an event. These are hand carried animated props that will no doubt leave a lasting impression on your audience. You can dress one of your zombies as a pizza deliver guy and adorn him or her in one of your haunt T shirts.

Another way to go would be as a zombie carnie vendor.

We can even add your haunt name on the front of the tray. These are available as 'Cotton Candy' (as shown), 'Popcorn', and 'Cold Drinks' at present with several others in the works at this time. Within the next couple of weeks they will also be available with a detailed character monsters inside and also a water spritzer.

I run the Charlotte Zombie Walk and allow any and all haunts that wish to pass out flyers to people we shuffle past to do so. All I ask is that I know they're doing it...

Thanks Jonathan, they are a lot of fun to walk around with. One suggestion we had was to include a sound box, but so far every time we've taken them out to play with them there has always been a scream furnished by the intended victim(s). Besides, the slam noise usually helps the gag quite a bit.

I definitely endorse the use of sandwich boards in practically any open event. We open our haunt every spring for a giant BBQ fest that is about a block away from our haunt. So during each day we send some of our cast in costume to wander through the crowd passing out flyers and the sandwich board is a serious eye catcher if done right. And it doesn't get any cheaper....a couple of pieces of Masonite and a couple of bungie shoulder straps and you're ready to paint your info on both sides.

You could alway hack into one of those highway signs along the road. LOL! You know the ones where they put Warning Zombies Ahead. But I wouldnt advise it. LOL!

Definitely get in touch with the Zombie Walk organizers and offer tickets for the "best dressed" at the event. This way they can promote prizes (and good will mentions of your haunt name) as a way to encourage participation. Maybe even create 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize packs that include tickets, t-shirts, and coupons.

                          Hey Mike,
Yes, spring loaded and very easy to reset. Simply push the lid down to lock the trigger for the next scare. I need to get more detailed video of all of the styles, and I should have those by the week-end. Plus I hope to add video of a custom one that was ordered that has Candy Apples.

Ryan the costume contest is a fantastic idea to promote with. And it could also be a great recruitment tool for new actors. The more elaborate an individual's costume is, the more dedicated that person might be.

Costume contest is a great idea. People always love free t-shirts as well. Hopefully they turn into walking billboards around town all year long. Make sure to have plenty of flyers/business cards to hand out to everyone. Mark them different then your other coupons so when haunt season comes around you can tell home many zombies return to your haunt. Magnets might work as well. Stick them all over signs, mailboxes, cars, buildings, etc. Unlike stickers they won't cause damage and people can take them to save for later. Guerilla marketing works best at this type of event. "get you name in front of as many people as possible for the least amount of money.

I was always a fan of the fourth of July parades. Register a float and enter you herse. Since it's usually a family friendly event you can go crazy. Stay away from the gore and lean towards the semi spooky. These types of events are usually cheap and fun, plus it will give you positive exposure in your community.
