  • Props - how and why?

    So…. First year, the crew is set designers, actors, and makeup people in the core. We will have almost no props other than weapons and what dresses the sets.

    Crazy question…. When I budgeted I could not think of a single place I absolutely had to have props. What is everyone using static props for? Does it scare someone to walk into a vampire or something that doesn't move? I love a lot of what the prop vendors do, but where are you guys using static props that works?

    Just a reality check here, I can’t make changes or buy props now, so this is really a 2012 question.

    static props

    To me static props are the "lead up" that lets the customers guard down when they find out it isnt real.....and then the real actor scares them. You can also use them in darker areas where people do not know if they are real or not.....every other "one" can be real or every third one and it makes the customer scared of every one and it makes it seem like there are more actors than there really are. If you walk into a room and a big jack in the box or big fake clown is in the center of the room, you will focus your attention on that "prop" waiting on something to happen, when really the actor jumps out from beside you or behind you. Walking into a room of dummies or props isnt scary, but one or two of them are real......then all of them become scary, because what is real and what isnt? Just a thought.

      Why use staic figures?
      If you dont have "statues" in the front of the haunt, then actors in the middle and back of the haun cant use statue scares in the middle and back of the haunt. If everytime guests see a "statue" it turns out to be an actor then the scare stops working. By mixing them in its forces the patrons to keep wondering.
      Also They can add to a set by simply adding to the feel of it. uests dont identify wih "things" in a set. So they might not notice a meat grinder, human hands, or bloody aprons in a set. Or they might see them but not put two and two together. But....if they see a butcher, even a static, then they scan the room and add it all up.
