  • Actor for woods?

I was trying to find a good tree looking costume to hide in the woods and jump out. I like to find "besides camouflage/mossman outfit.
Or what other costume would work great to blend in with the woods. I found cornstalk looking costumes but too expensive. Any ideas? I do not want a fake looking monster or something similar. I want something more realistic.

    Thanks

Do you want a supernatural creature, or what do you mean by realistic?
Bigfoot? Werewolf? If you want real your choices are much more limited. Keep up the dialog so we can narrow down your wants.

@Allen. Sounds like he wants to look like he's part of the tree or forest before he attacks. I saw somebody had a tutorial video of using crutches and vines to make a tree creature, the actor could pull the crutches in close and be invisible and then open up like a pod, the crutches were like extra long front legs.

@Jmullens- LOL that is one of my tutorial vids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqre5XD5jYs
I got it, reading the post a fifth time its all clear to me now. Yes, I think the arm crutches are a great way to go. In that case here are a few pics of tree suits i have done for inspiration. I dont have time to make anything this season however someone else might.

All the staves you see in those pics are modified versions of the arm crutches, they fold over the body hiding the shape untill they swing open and surprise the guests.
here are a few simple make up options, the base of this make up is a crumpled brown hand towel (the knd that come on a roll) they work great!
Keep in mind, the make up is finished the costume isint on in these pics. Now that I know where he is headed I have more to offer- my mistake for reading it wrong....4 times. Good thing Im so pretty cause I aint bright.

Ok... I can do a tutorial on it, but it cant be till a few weeks out. I banked several up because I know Im gonna be slammed the next few weeks (like everyone else) I can however leave a wordy post that hopefully helps explain one way of making the suits (there are many ways- I tend to focus on low cost and simplicity).

Start with Camoflauge clothing- Its getting close to hunting season so they will be in stores soon if not now, the more leafy and fancy clothes you get, the less work you have to do later to make it look tree like.

                      1. Lets pretend you are starting with a leafy camo jumpsuit from Walmart for $90.

                      2. watch my silicone glove tutorial
                      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6GtUx7Zidc
Make the gloves on your actors hands, have him wear latex gloves inside and wrap his arm in saran wrap so no wet silicone gets on him (its fine dry and aired out but not good for you when wet. Use Brown silicone caulk (available at home depot) and spead it liberally on the hand and arm of the glove. Then use a plastic comb to drag through the silicone and get a bark like texture.

                      3. Measure out the general size of your actors chest and cut a piece of canvas into about that size and shape.
Use the same brown caulking and give the chest piece the same bark texture that you did for the hands
Also make plates that cover the front of their thighs as well as shin plates, and upper arms if you feel ambitious
Either sew or hot glue fabric ties onto these plates so they can tie onto the actor
                      4. Take a piece of camo net and make a poncho for the actor, about two feet wide and eight feet long a hole for the actors head goes in the middle

                      5. Buy a bunch (like 50) of the ivy garlands from the dollar tree. they have the best price and the come in 4ft strands, the same kid I use in the crutches video.
Dress your actor in the camo jump suit, then have them put on the poncho, then tie on the plates, and then the gloves.
Buy these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6GtUx7Zidc Buy about 4 packs of them use the ivy to make sleeves for the costume. wind one around the arm from shoulder to hand, ziptie another strand along the top and then the back of the arm It will stay a sleeve when you remove it. attach the sleves to the poncho with the zipties.
Do the same for the legs with the Ivy and attach them to the poncho. Attach them to the inside so the poncho can hang down in front and break up the actors sillouette.

You now have almost two suits, and inner camo suit that you bought, and the outer cage type Ivy/camo/ bark plate suit that you made. That is so the inner suit can be washed. The outer suit can be hosed off if necessary. You really need the layers in order to add depth to the costume so people think they are looking into the layers of the tree.

For the head/mask get a mask you like the shape of. Paint it all black with exterior latex house paint from home depot. Drybrush in a similar brown to the caulk color you used. When thats dry add a bit of white to the brown to lighten it. then dry brush with the lighter color for a more natural bark. You can keep adding white to the brown and dry brushing lighter and lighter- it really adds depth.
You can also dry brush the plates in the same way to add depth to them. Use rubber cement to glue spanish moss in a few places to the mask and maybe the plates.

If you want to go the make up route instead...you can grab my airbrush DVD because disc 2 has the tree make up on it

That pretty much covers your suit- If you are making it and get stuck, feel free to call me and I will help if I am able
Allen H 469-337-4929 I have made about 10 of these suits and they work great in haunts.
