  • Smith Scabs recaps

Well, I just switched from Protechs to Smith Scabs this year (5th year as a slider) and in 4 days tore through the Scabs...

I was looking on socalskateshop.com at their recaps... I saw they have "Burley" recaps, and in their description it says they "outlast all other recaps" Are these worth the money? Do they slide any better or worse? They're double the price of the normal ones. So I'm debating getting 2 sets of the normal recaps, or 1 set of the Burley sets.

    thanks,
    Austin

I have been a little involved in Roller Derby over the last several years, and oddly enough. Protech are the low end of the derby Pad market. We sell 187's but I have not used them for sliding so I can't say how they would do.

But I think most any pad will work. especially if you cover the caps with plexiglass etc...

Why not go back to Pro-Tec? they're relatively cheap and I can usually get one good season out of them with no issues...

I decided to switch from Pro Techs to Smith Scabs because of my bad experiences with Pro Techs... The 4 seasons I've used them, they have all been done within 2-3 days... I'm not sure why I go through pads so much faster than most other people...

But I switched to Scabs, which by the way slide a HELL of a lot better than my Pro Techs did, and I love them thus far, I just didn't know what recaps to get. The pad overall is fine, it's just the plastic part that covers your knees that cracked. So I bought some recaps on socalskateshop.com, so once they get here tomorrow I'll see how well that goes.

From what I've heard the recaps are very good.

        thanks for the replies,
        Austin

Just got them in a few hours ago, the sticky pads they come with to attach them to your knee pads hold for about 10 slides... So I took them off and put industrial strength velcro instead. That seems to hold a lot better.

I will post up a review here on this thread after I use them for a longer period this weekend.

            thanks,
            Austin

you can make your own recaps also from expoxy and fabric- about six layers. I will do a youtube vieo for it in a week or two.

I would certainly like to see that Allen. Any chance you can make them spark...?

I dont right now have a way to make the knee pads spark, but next wednesday I think my video will be on making sparking clacker gloves for $30 non sparking is about $15. I will post that video wednesday and I will work on shooting one for making your own caps soon. I might have to make a set next week.

Used them this past weekend... And I must say, the recaps are nice. I bought a set of the BURLEY caps and the standard caps. I used the BURLEY ones, and they were awesome. Slid better than any pro tech pads, or the standard smith pads without recaps. This is the first year I've had to buy recaps, and I'm glad I did.

They are really thick too, so they don't wear down easily. Keep in mind, sliding isn't my "main" scare tactic, but I throw down every so often. Probably about 20 slides a night. And after 2 nights (roughly 40 slides) they are still almost brand new looking... Well with the scuffs and scratches of course. but the pad is barely worn away.

                      Love them. I'd recommend them.
