This year at the HEX HOUSE in Oklahoma I built a fireplace illusion. The room its in looks to be a dead (no pun) end, until the actor tells you to crawl into the flames. Inside looks like a tunnel, dark and tall enough to let a wheelchair through. The illusion is the simulated 'scooby-doo' flames projected onto fog. I put a constant running fogger on the outside that shoots through a PVC pipe to the front. The smoke lifts up through the opening of the fireplace and up through a fan. The projector in back plays a fire video loop. It looks nice and I will post pictures soon.

Before I start, I should tell you that working at the hex house like other haunted house attractions can be challanging with other people who work with you. Everyone wants to be the top idea guy. These videos shows the illusion being built by me before it was changed and wrecked by others.

In this first link I built the tunnel frame and developed the fog tube. It was just holes drilled into PVC. I plugged the end so no fog would get out.

Notice that early in this video a projector sits over a plexyglass roof. There is no video playing in the projector just the bright blue log on screen. When the fire video played is was not perfect but it was better than what others changed it into. They changed it into red and orange flickering lights. It no longer looks like a fireplace, just a lit tunnel. Also I added a fan to suck the fog up and out of the tunnel for more or a flat smoke screen for the projected video. This fan is shown top right in the begining of the video.

Here is a walkthrough that shows the fireplace done (without details), it is not turned on. Soon after I shot this video the two other envious guys changed it over night. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyVYC7EDGUk

Currently, the fireplace is fogging everything else but inside the tunnel. This includes the room, the actor walkways and the room the fogger is in. When I built it, as you can see in the video, only the fireplace got fog.

If I can I will try to upload better videos soon.

There are lots of behind the scene pictures in my profile pictures. Not sure how to link them here right now.
