extending arm??

Hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. Last season I was walking through King's Dominion's Halloween Haunt's "cornstalkers" There was a character in the maze that had what seemed like a pneumatic arm. I'm not sure exactly what it was, or how the effect was done, but it was almost like he hit a button, his arm shot out, maybe around 3 ft, and hit a wall, creating a really loud noise and a really great effect. If it weren't a constant flow of patrons, I would have asked Anyone have any ideas on what this could have been?
