Flame Proofing

Hi guys, about how many gallons of flame proofing should I get in order to flame proof a new haunt? It's small, 8 rooms, 140 wall panels (70 2 sided walls), and each room will only have various props, nothing too large.

I've only every used flame proofing before, but I've never ordered it.

I'm thinking starting off with 5 gallons and get more as needed?

We used upwards of 10 gallons on just our fabric. We have a larger haunt, but fabrics can eat up the flame retardant quickly. All the other stuff you should be able to spray (instead of soak), and shouldn't be too much. Make sure your fire marshal doesn't require it to be fire proofed by a certified flame applicant before doing it yourself.

Well number one is your haunt already painted? If so it is flammable already...Unless you painted it with fire retardant paint. you cannot cover painted surfaces with flame retardant. If you were going to do it right i would buy a 55 gallon drum and work from there. teat the raw wood then paint with a fire retardant paint. you can but additives for about 64.00 a gal. that will treat about 16 gallons of paint. http://www.firechemicals.com/ look under paint and stain additives. You'll probably need (3) 5G pails from NYFS. Order directly from them, cost per 5G pail I remember being $150-160 each. Shipping was reasonable too. Very friendly and helpful folks at NYFS.

As a first year pro haunt this past season we built our attraction from scratch. Ordered roughly 200 sheets of ply wood that needed to be fire treated.

We ordered (4) 5G pails of FR and used just about every drop. Attraction was apx. 2700 sq ft.

Hop on the NYFS website it lists a lot of helpful info as far as how much product coverage depending on what you're treating.

If you're trying to figure out your sq. footage and how much FR you'll need don't forget to take into account each piece of plywood has TWO SIDES that need to be treated!

Hope this gives you better direction. I'd definitely say you'll need the best part of (3) 5G pails though.

Thanks for all the advice guys! We had a meeting with our fire marshal and he is telling us we need to buy flame-treated plywood anyway and flame-retardant paint. So we'll only need FP for everything else. He's a great guy, but very picky as he should be! haha

So you treated your raw boards, and then painted them?
