  • Anyone cover their floor with gravel or other material?

I have over 100' of cave/tunnel that is inside my building. To give a better effect I thought about throwing down some gravel that has fine dirt and smalls mixed with it so it will pack hard. Anything so you don't have just bare concrete. I also thought about throwing a smidgen of sand on top to improve the color over that of the gravel.

Besides cleaning up at the end of the season any downsides?

We try to stay ADA so I would put anything down on the floor because of wheelchairs or other walking devices. Also could make for a slip problem, I would look at painting the floor, you'll be able to get the same effect with just sponging a few earth tons down.

Inside of our outdoor haunt we use gravel every single place you can think of so to answer your question YES!

One year we tried to use SAND in the darkness to add some realism to the floor... ahhh that didn't work out because we couldn't keep the sand in one place and it spread all over the place.

I have used bark chip mulch on floors it sets like a cemetery and sand in sets like a crypt or mummy scene . I would suggest covering walk ways maybe if it were out doors on a trail

We used dark brown mulch in our cave scene this past season. Big store brand bags are no more than $3 each at Home Depot/Lowes. Not to mention lightweight to carry and dump around.

I'd imagine raking up mulch like we did is MUCH EASIER to clean up then a ton of gravel.

We had a lot of compliments about using the mulch too (and in another area) which truly created the illusion you were not just inside a building anymore.

Our haunt is 100% wheelchair accessible and rolling over mulch was not an issue at all.

P.S. if you have any actors wearing the ghilli/camo suits like we did in our cave scene...the mulch big time sticks to those suits and is a royal pain to comb out!

Another idea might be that rough indoor/outdoor carpet that's real stiff/crunchy feeling. Usually comes in brown colors, half inch or so thick so you would actually feel the texture of it while walking through your cave/tunnel scene. Don't know how cost effective that would be. Plus cutting it to fit however you have your windy cave set up.

I have used mulch in graveyard scenes. The problem which mulch is keeping it in one place if people are walking on it. I am SOL on trying to use indoor/outdoor carpet due to my layout and the cost probably would add up.

I originally thought about packing 2"-3" of gravel with some of the very fine gravel chips/dirt mixed in. Cant remember what you call it right off hand... Thought maybe if you had enough fine stuff mixed with the gravel you would get a pretty solid surface. A little sand on top shouldn't move around hardly at all and should smooth out the path quite a bit. May have to do a test run sometime.

To keep the mulch in place and prevent it from being tracked all over we did the following:

Find or buy the cheap indoor/outdoor black mat carpets that come in sizes like 3'x5 5'x8' like you'd see in the inside entrance of a business to prevent making floor wet snowy etc.

The back side is rubber so it wont move around. The top side is a thin rough carpet and the mulch sticks to it very well, laying on top! Only a little will be scuffed around. Use multiple pieces of that cheap carpet from wal mart, home depot, etc.
