  • Haunts in Malls?

We continue to look hard for an appropriate building for our 2013 season (yes, once again, we failed at opening this year) But finding an appropriate location is very difficult. We have searched high and low and still haven't found a fit. We are beginning to consider our local shopping mall. Good idea? No?

Location (malls are OK) and ADVERTISING (not publicity) will make or break your show. My two cents.

if you do a mall, probably the biggest thing is to make sure you have an outside entrance and there are no stipulations set by the mall on the hours you can be open.

I agree .. we did ours in a mall 2 years ago and that what everyone thought we closed when the mall closed... cause we didn't have a door to the out side..

Plus ... Allot of people thought we was just a kid haunt ... cause they didn't think the mall you let all the gore and stuff come in ... that was a supprise to allot of people after they went thru... thought it was better than what they was expecting...

I guess if you can't locate another building, then a mall will have to do.
We did our first year haunt in a mall and it helped us get better prepared for the next year when we found a better location.
It was a great learning curve and helped out a bunch. Better than not doing at haunt at all IMHO. But it all depends on several factors as previously mentioned.

We rented out searchlights during the weekends to show our location.
Rented a giant inflatable skull to put on top the roof near our entrance every night to show our location.
Had radio stations come out on the weekends and had commercials thru out the month.
We sent out press releases to all the papers and, radio stations and TV stations.
Put fliers in all the Halloween stores and other places.

In the end, we broke even but the experience was priceless....
The next year we moved into another building, had a better understanding and knew exactly what to do.
