Falling Wall

Looking for ideas for building a falling wall. Trying to save on actors so i dont want it actor run, any ideas?

To be scary a falling wall would have to seem to be invading the customer space and since unwatched customers may wander , disaster would follow, somebody clobbered, battered bruised, cut.
Motion detecting switches could still fail to correctly operate such a device. You would have to have a pair of actual human eyes, ears and brain to make the safety factor high enough, and then hire a very responsible "human".
Maybe the effect could be accomplished via a shadow play?
A moving light makes it seem as if a wall is moving because the light is moving or changing from one light source to another?
So far shadows have never left any physical damage on skin, have they?
Frightening someone into a solid wall will though.

build the wall out of corogated roofing tin. on its side so it looks like a large garage door. the bottom is fixed to the floor and the top at both sides is in a groove so it can move. a piston pulls the midde backwards and it makes a helacious noise and the top slides towards them a bit.
Nothing falls over them, nothing is unsafe that way AND it scares the hell out of peeps because of the noise.

Usually there is something that stops the patrons from actually being in the path of movement. A hand rail, props on the floor, furniture, what looks like shrubs or garbage laying around. It could be the floor is different materials and one is something you would avoid walking on like larger sharp rocks or a pile of bones stacked up.

Not sure what you're budget is, but if you really don't want an actor (and I agree with Jim where you SHOULD have an actor controlling this) you could look into scare factory's hallway 2 hell. Really interesting piece.
