He wasn’t about to let a pack of wolves make him pass up the kind of money that was going to make them all rich. After he swung the gate all the way open, he walked back to each vehicle and told his men to go home, grab a rifle and meet him back at the gate at 7:30 a.m. and they nodded. However Frank had anything but a restful sleep that night. Time and time again he woke up with a sweaty brow from dreaming.
He dreamed the wolves came at him and his men from every direction. He heard their screams as they were ripped apart. He saw himself running for his life from a grizzly bear knowing he couldn’t outrun it. He had visions of falling trees crushing but not killing him. He saw everything as clearly as if his eyes were open as a landslide shoved his truck over a cliff as it burst into flames. By morning his hand was shaking as he poured himself a cup of coffee.
He grabbed his jacket and his Remington 30-06 rifle and headed for his truck. He was the first to reach the forestry gate. Once the other five trucks arrived, as hard as he tried, his key wouldn’t open the padlock he had placed in the latch. Frustrated, he went back to his truck and came back with the bolt cutters he had used to cut the forestry padlock off.
Once he cut his padlock off, he walked back to the last truck and gave the man a new padlock as he cursed his way back to his truck. It was still dark as he led the way up the mountain. The moon was full and bright and fog drifted across the road so thick at times that Frank had to walk ahead and see the road. Suddenly as the fog began to clear he saw a woman in a white dress up ahead.
Behind her the moon was bright and as his headlights shone on her he could see the woman wore a white dress and he saw her long white hair. Her head was tilted down but as she lifted her head he saw a devilish stare from her eyes. He hit his brakes hard and skidded a couple feet on the gravel as he stared at the black crow in her right hand flapping its wings.
In disbelief he watched the woman begin to float off the ground almost three feet as a dozen crows flying behind her came closer and flew around her until they were perched on her shoulders and head. With the wave of her left hand, Frank’s windshield shattered loudly and he turned his head away to keep from glass getting in his eyes. When he turned his head back around, the pack of wolves that he had seen the day before were gathering on the hillside near the woman.
One wolf in particular sat on the road near her. Everyone in their trucks behind Frank could see the woman also. As she pointed one of her fingers from her left hand directly at Frank she warned him to go back down the mountain. “Take your men and leave this place. Death awaits all of you. Leave now.” she warned in an ominous voice. Slowly Frank reached over for his rifle but he saw her shake her left hand at him as if to say, “I wouldn’t do that!”
In those split seconds Frank was able to get off one shot at the witch and he hit her right where her heart was. He saw the hole in her dress but not a drop of blood flowed out as he suddenly felt his rifle jerked out of both hands through the windshield. He stared as he watched his rifle fly off the cliff to his left. The witch let go of the crow in her right hand and the other crows flew off of the witch and began circling above her as they crowed loudly.
Frank saw a devilish smile in her eyes as she looked up at the mountain side and spoke words too low for him to hear. Suddenly the road under his truck began to shake like an earthquake before she pointed both of her hands at the mountain. With the jerk of both hands, the mountain side broke loose and all six trucks were caught in a landslide.
Dirt, boulders and trees slid down the mountainside slamming into the trucks and over the side of the cliff they tumbled. By the time the mountain stopped shaking, the men and their trucks were buried in debris. The road itself had collapsed as well. There would be no more loggers or trespassers entering her valley.
