  • Lighting/Paint color effect/scare

We are looking to add a new feature in our home-scare this year. The basic idea is to paint a 'room' a blue-ish color and have the set lighting to be blue also so it washes out the paint then have an actor flip a switch so the lights change to a 'scary' red and all the blue paint shows up in contrast to the red light and reveal handprints on the wall and scratched writing in the 'paint'.

Short of going to the local hardware store and dropping a paycheck on every color of red/blue paint/lightbulbs to get that perfect combination... Is there anyone that has attempted/had success with this type of room effect???

The room itself is going to be a 'childrens ward' in a Sanatarium where one of our actors will be sitting on the floor playing with toys while guests enter the room. She will have the switch behind her so when everyone is in, she just reaches back and flips the switch changing the the lights in the room. There will be a pneumatic dresser that shakes and the drawers move. toys, books, and other furniture throughout the area to give that 'kids room' feel.

Experiment a little on small scale with the paint you use and color of lights. Definitely make sure that all your lights are the exact same color of blue and red - no variations. I would highly recommend LEDs. Depending on your budget, to help keep more of a realistic lighting look for a sanitarium, you could use dim white light then flip on UV light that will expose the hidden images. You would paint them with special clear paint that is revealed only under UV light.
Here's a vid that may help you:

And should you decide to try the UV version I mentioned, here's a link to that type of paint.
