The man whose late-night chuckle sent chills up the spines of generations of Hoosiers has died.

Bob Carter—better known as the ghoulish Sammy Terry—passed away Sunday. He was 83 years old.

From 1962 to 1989, Carter hosted “Shock Theater” and “Nightmare Theater” on WTTV-4. Sammy Terry became a Hoosier icon with his skull cap, heavy makeup and pet spider George, introducing horror movies to late-night audiences.

Carter is a native of Decatur, Ill. He graduated from Millikin University with a degree in radio communications. After earning a master’s degree from Syracuse University, Carter worked as a disc jockey in Fort Wayne before coming to Indianapolis.

A public memorial will be held Friday, July 5, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Singleton Mortuary, 7602 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227.

Those of us that lived thru the Sammy Terry era, will never forget his scariness, horror and humor on his Friday night TV show. Many of us loved to stay up late and watch his show and get thrilled. It was fun. Sammy Terry may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
