  • Goretorium - startled or scared?

Okay so I am just returning from Vegas (business trip) and I was pretty stoked about being able to stop by Eli's Goretorium. But I have to say I was a little disappointed. The sets were great, super detail, even though I felt like I was at Transworld looking at all the props and stuff (looks like he covered just about all you vendors).

As I exited, I couldn't quite put my finger on it, until the next morning (okay I was a little slow - I was in Vegas you know, and I may have been a little under the influence). There was a lot of acting ..... a lot of acting. To the point it was a distraction. There were a lot of "startles" which is very different than "scares."

I say all this because it made me think about my own haunt and acting/design of the overall theme, down to the music. I am proud to say there are still people who will not go through my haunt because they are truly scared, (although it baffles me why). I only have one "startle" effect, although people are already well on edge when they reach the first real scare. It just helps send them over the edge.

So in planning going forward, I am going to make sure that everything we do supports the scare factor, and not the startle factor. The same gag can be both, depending on how it is used, which is what we will be focusing on going forward!

Anyone else been through Eli's haunt? Your thoughts?

    Yup, same impression.

Although, I'm one that will allow it to be what it is, and happily appreciate it for what it is. Not that you made a complaint, mind you.

I smiled, laughed and jumped, but scared? Heh- I run a haunt- nothing, let alone spooky things, can scare me now! lol

I liked the kitchen set a lot- it had a creepy vibe, and the elevator switch-a-roo too. Great decoration all around and a nice, winding path.

Scaring is a real challenge- it's psychological, and that varies person to person.

Startles- well those are really for the tough guys and you have to have them, otherwise they won't have much to say other than "great looking place!"

I paid particular attention to their marketing. I have their discount coupon, that they hand out right outside, hanging on my monitor as an example of what NOT to do. It's dark and hard to read. Honestly I'd rather look at the escort flyers raining from the skies in LV.

I will be heading out to Vegas here in about 3 weeks. I plan to go though it. I am hoping that with it being the start of the haunt season that it will be a better show then the non season times.

Worth seeing but not mind blowing

I went through it a few weeks ago. I've been through so many haunts for so many years that I'm pretty immune to being scared or startled. A shame really . So it's hard for me to judge if Goretorium was scary or startling. Personally, I didn't see a lot of our industry props - I was actually surprised at how few I saw. The set design was the best thing it had going for it and was top-notch. The #1 thing I liked was the elevator ride that bumped sideways every now and then. Oh, and the "endless pit" open elevator shafts in the foyer were pretty cool.

I think the ticket price was like $30 or something close to that which was too much for how short it was. But I'm very happy that this place exists in the heart of Vegas as it gives attention and exposure to our industry. If you are a haunter and visiting Vegas I suggest you check it out - if only to help support it (I don't think they are doing very well).

They have a photo op at the beginning where they startle you with an air blast. Here's a picture of my daughter and me, I would say she was definitely startled

I agree I hope they stay in business, and I hope to see it one day soon. After filing for bankruptcy I hope that act right there got their ego in check so they can start operating like the should be... their people told me it was a 500 million dollar haunted house, best in the entire world, blah, blah, they wanted free stuff from us whatever dude... not happening.

I'll never let that 500 million dollar comment go... LOL!

I told the guy I was like you know for 500 million dollars you could open an entire amusement park, you could but multiple hotels, or film TWO avenger movies... he said 500 million! LOL

I hope to go see it when I'm up in Vegas I mean seriously I want to know what 500 million dollars buys. Larry

But, If YOU could, would you?

If you knew for certain that a certain item or room could frighten 99% of the people who experienced, would you do this? Allowing everybody to experience it?
Would you be denying responsibility for may happen later to that terrified person?
What if you discovered for every ten customers that you terrorized, that 2 or 3 of them would NEVER step foot inside something called "A Haunted House" again?
I have met a great number of such victims of being over-frightened. I spend much time and effort, as will do my Wife, trying to calm them, get them in the house (Ours).. but some just cannot be helped and will never return to buy another ticket. They will also not be talking about their experience(s) inside a haunt. They will never be bringing their children to see the tour.
They won't probably be telling any neighbors or co-workers about it either....
If it is an "Ego" thing of inflicting fear of extreme danger upon another person, then "Ego" has run amok and needs stepping down .
It may be quite the balancing act as shown when I would read the "suggestins" in my suggestion box (I once had) althought I usually only saw 5 different responses, which were: (1)"It's TOO DARK!" (2) "It's too light!" (3) "It's too SCary!" (4) I't's not scary enough!, andwhat might number 5 be? (5) "Jim.. Go !$&*#$#! Yourself!"
(I got real tired of trying to that to myself, I fianlly figured that I had to hire this done "Professionly!")

                  Oh, by the Way..

I have had Ravens Grin open every night for 26 years, work on it, in it everyday, so counting those hours and if I paid myself $10.oo per /hour, my house could be at least a $2,372,500.00-- "Haunted House".
The location cost was very inexpensive, just a mere $3,000 would be added to that figure.
Nope. I not making anymore "House Payments" anymore, either..... I sure wasted my life trying to do this since everyone told me :"It will Never "Work". (And this has been more FUN than a dozen barrells of sexy-monkey parts!)
