  • How to make water look "deep" in haunted house

I know a lot of haunts have water inside or walk over water. We also have an area in our sewer that you walk over water on a see through walkway. It is only about 18 inches deep and we had a hard time making It so that you couldn't see the bottom. We wanted it to look "deep" so that you couldn't tell how far down it was. Do any of you have tips on a chemical or trick to put in the water so that you can't see the bottom? Let me know your suggestions. Thanks!

Probably depends on the water basin, but why not just add some black flat latex paint. Maybe even throw in a bit of oil based green to add some slime effect here or there.

Well first of all don't add anything to the water itself. You want to paint the basin to look deep. Paint the bottom and about 1/3 up the sides black, then add moss and other effects near the surface to help blend the transition. Also make sure your lighting hits from extreme angles, if you hit the water from straight up and down the light will travel through the water, but if you hit it from the side it will bounce back and that helps with the illusion also.

What about a mirror? I've seen artificial ponds that have a mirror bottom and it makes them appear twice as deep. You can get large shatterproof plexiglass mirrors on the cheap through some vendors.

        Just a thought.

Yeah similar to what Tyler said, but make essentially a bottomless pit, put a mirror on the bottom (or anything reflective really, maybe even cheap mylar. Then put a 1 way mirrored plexi over the top, have the inside full of water and add an extra inch or two of water on the top for effect.

But yes, NEVER actually put anything IN the water to get the effect, could be pretty hazardous and your inspectors may not take too kindly to it. If you wanna do the best, do it right.

              Gila Window Film

Not sure this will help, but I did a 4x8 Plexiglass door for a Pepper Ghost efx last year and used "Gila Window Tint" from Home Depot. It worked great...might work for you?
