  • Finding inexpensive and good products

    Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this site, I'm also a new to the industry so some advice would be appreciated. I have done yard haunts for 7 years but that is a different kind of monster to owning and operating a house.
I have done multiple searches for different products and never come up with the web sites I see discussed here. It is time consuming to continue to browse treads trying to find websites so...where is the best place to find; air brush make-up/paint? Fire retardant? Fire retardant plastic? Facial prosthetics? Favorite brands/types, etc. etc. etc.
I have found sites for these items but am hoping there is a industry secret I am not aware of.
    Any insight would be helpful,
    Jan/Grey Lady

Hi. Well my personal experience has shown that your learning journey is tedious, slow and never ending.

Reading forums and googling, and youtube is the best choice. This is only one forum, and everything you seek can be found buried here or elsewhere else.

You will also come across numerous opinions on every single subject- many contradicting others. You best bet is to follow your own judgement and budget first.

For example- my opinion on haunt makeup is that expensive, ready to use airbrush paint has its place and works great but there are many alternatives- I like pax paint, it simply does the job right.

For fire retardant- you should talk to you local fire marshal first and save yourself time and money. I found this and took the data sheets in for approval: http://www.fabricflameproofingco.com/chemicals.shtml

The most valuable secret in this business is to know which vendor is going to support you and which is going to screw you. Again forums are the only way to find that out.

As haunt owner- one pf the most important jobs you have is to the footwork- the research, the digging, and endless question asking and decision making.

    Keep going!
How can a man die better than facing fearful odds, for the ashes of his fathers and the temple of his gods.

What you put into your mind- you put into your life.

Hello Grey Lady. Zombie has given some excellent information. Not much to add but is would recommend a trade show as well (for next year). You can see a lot of the products and ask questions about them. You also get to meet the people who sell them. Along with the vendors, there are lots of haunters who can share their experiences in the business. Like ZT said, there is no substitute for doing the research. There is a wealth of info out there on the forums and search engines. If you do have a specific question, post it on a forum and most of the time someone can point you in the right direction. Best of luck to you this season!

          Welcome to the forums!

Zombie toxin gave a GREAT response.

          Just my two cents;

Black plastic, fire retardant or not, seems to have a sour taste in the mouths of pro haunters and your local marshalls. Try buying some used wall panels, I scored a couple hundred once for all of $2 a pop! They tend to average between $10-20/piece on average used but look around, it's your safest bet if you can afford it!

For flame retardant, I LOVE New York Fire Shield, check it out!

For makeup, mehron liquid makeup is great and pretty affordable, you can even water down some cake makeup like mehron/kryolan/Wolfe if you want to be creative.

Frightprops.com carries a wide array of pro haunt EVERYTHING and is definitely worth checking out.

And Nancy over at HalloweenAsylum.com has some decent deals on facial prosthetics and more budget oriented props.
