  • "Too scary"

Well darned if you do and darned if you don't scare em. Group who did our corn maze and separate haunted trail booked the maze today "...but we are not doing the haunt again" I asked why. Well the group (high schoolers) just didn't want to do it this year. Pressing further I got "it was just too scary for many of them and a few had to be escorted out by your helpers they got so scared" talking further I got "It wasn't lame by any means; and trust me I have been to many lame haunts".

Doing too good a job cost about 25 haunt upgrades for this year. Oh well...I guess I'll just be happy knowing she rates us so highly in being effective. I rather be known as too scary than one of the lame ones in Michigan any day.

      Totally legitimate quandary tho...

We have heard the same many many times and it has lead my brain down a new thought process that involves another attraction- for us it would be a third, along side our haunt and Kids Halloween Town. Unfortunately I do not have room for a third...

BUT IF I DID, I think I might go for an "all ages" and more theatrical set. I think I'd probably limit its size and thus its costs but charge similar rates to pay for the customers luxury. I have learned so so so much in the last few years that I can visualize such a thing now.

We have advertised publicly (in attempt to stay in community good-graces) that we consider ourselves a PG-13 event. That really spread and it drew A lot of intrigue both adding and taking away certain demographics. We still get all ages going in (we won't deny them) but most of the parents I know personally are making their younger kids wait.

        major problems this year.

We have shacks on outside of corn wher you start our haunt. Vortex, ugly tots nursery, insane asylum. People are so freaked out they are stopping and refusing to enter the corn field. it must be the loud Distortions Krazy Kristen and a air cannon hitting them and THEN looking at entering that field and the path that is about to swallow them and hearings screams every where in front of them. But just so many freeze up and refuse to enter the field. Going to cut stalks and line the fence area with them so the contrast of inside building transitioning to field is not so intimidating. LOL...I'm going to make my field look friendlier by preconditioning them to the corn.

We had an old sliding door from a railroad freight car that we used for our front door. They didn't know how bad the screams really were until they were inside, and the door slammed shut behind them, and by then, it was too late. Those screams are infectious. When the next room is screaming and the sirens and buzzers are blaring, everyone in earshot is bracing themselves for similar punishment. Time to get out the piss bucket!

We have battling charity events here in my town. Our haunt is "the scary one", while our competitor's event is very kid-friendly, and more of a Halloween display than an actual haunted house. They literally attract 500% - 800% more people than we do (yes, "percent"!). Being kid-friendly can have its advantages.

I believe you! Do you have any idea what sq footage this kid's haunt might be and what they charge?

You should devide it into one for kids and one for adults
