We start with a brainstorming session and sketching it out on paper.
Once the ideas start to gel, we start building in a 3d modeling program to make sure everything fits together.

I’ve always used the drawing tool in Excel to design our haunt. Then I provide this to an architect who lays it out in CAD for submission to the city and fire marshal. I include an 6’ emergency access walkway around the haunt that leads to our emergency exit doors to the outside. We have a design team that meets to discuss our scenes and ideas. Then we meet with a construction team to review our plans.
Highly recommend you attend one of the "Getting Started in the Haunt Industry" classes at one of the conventions. You don't know what it is that you don't know and these classes could be very helpful.

I use the same process as mentioned above. Graph paper> Google Sketchup. Allen Hopps has a DVD on this subject as well you might want to check out.

I have never used graph paper. I always start with autocad. If I need a 3d representation, I'll do it in solidworks. I pass that information to the architect who does a little adjustment and simplification on my drawings, and that gets turned into the building department.Brian Warner

I always start with graph paper to get a rough idea and sketch down. Then I translate everything into SketchUp and layout the entire room/area/haunt in 3D. I'll then send these files to a local architect for stamping and filing. Working with a 3D software gets you exact measurements and allows you to figure out any "problem areas" before they happen in real life on build day. There are several experts in this area throughout the industry....Allen Hopps, Leonard Pickel, Dan Faupel, David Carry, etc...the list goes on and on.
I would suggest taking some design classes at any of the haunt conventions, especially Transworld!
Also, visit my website: http://www.hauntdesignkit.com and learn more about designing your haunt with SketchUp. i offer a ton of haunt exclusive downloads with most being FREE!
