  • Insidious Chapter 3 Haunted House with Oculus Rift Future of Haunting?

    http://wgntv.com/2015/04/24/experien...ed-house-tour/

You know all the movie studios now are using Oculus Rift to do these touring demo of their movies. Here is one for Insidious 3. I'm wondering how long its going to be before the ENTIRE haunted house industry is using this technology to enhance their experience. Not long I'm sure because the technology will be available within a year.

It's not coming anywhere near me however I was reading online that Amazon will be selling this technology across the board in 1 to 2 years. So I would agree that haunted houses everywhere will be creating attractions for it. It wouldn't be cool if strip centers created experiences like a haunted house where you sat in a chair and had no need to visit a haunted house at all. I could also see xbox creating the same exact thing making haunts nearly obsolete. Its possible.

Yeah I basically read the same exact thing... I think everyone should be plotting and planning now! If you aren't already looking into the technology you should be soon. I can see where you can up-sell experiences for $40 bucks. Larry

It will never work in the haunt industry. People can sit home and play video games. It will go the way of the cheap DVD effects, and be available in the spirit store in 2 years.

I can honestly say that the entire haunted house industry, vendors, everything could have their entire industry and WORLD turned UP SIDE DOWN soon. I can see in strip centers these experiences mazes you walk thru where you feel and experience something like nothing else. If you haven't already demo this type of technology then you wouldn't understand but this technology could put an end to the entire haunted house industry within the next 5 years. This is serious! We are talking about LIVING A MOVIE, BEING INSIDE OF A GAME like TRON... I'm hearing that they even will be coming out with porn for this thing just like in some futuristic movie. This might go way beyond anything you've ever experience. I was told that this could replace entire amusement parks as you could ride ANY ride you can imagine from a room. Everything we know could be done with this futuristic technology.

              Oculus use -

I own one of the Oculus Rifts - We are actually using at our booths that we set up for various events just as a way to draw some people in. The game we currently use on it is called "The Affected" and it is an awesome "Scary" game. I can honestly say this game manages to make me jump every single time I play it, which very rarely happens in a haunted house.

I can see this being something usable as a side gimmick, but I don't see it actually giving haunts a run for their money. The think is regardless of how "Real" they can make the experience it will never replace the true experience, right now the limitation is the displays and the cords that run to the device. The displays still have a slight "screen door" effect which reminds you you have a device strapped to your face, the cords only allow you to wander so far...and without the ability to move around your quickly reminded that to are attached to a device.

Once they make the "Rotating Treadmills" more affordable this will help with the movement issue - but I think it has a ways to go before it is real enough to go beyond being considered a ""video game".

Oculus just announced the other day that the consumer version of the device will hit shelves Q1 2016, there are also a few other companies like Valve that are saying their virtual reality devices will be for sale by the end of the year.

Here is the game I referred to "The Affected" - This game honestly scared quite a few people enough for them to quit the game before finishing, each "Theme" takes about 5-10 minutes to go through depending how slow you move - sometimes it took people up to 30 minutes because they were to scared to go forward:

No one is ever leaving there couch again. The great and almighty OCULUS RIFT has everything from haunted houses to sex to warm sunshine to the feel of fresh grass between your toes to the smell of honey suckle on a warm spring day. We can all just live in a virtual reality. This will be the end of humanity. Where is JIM WARFIELD to back me up on this.

SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU'RE ATTENDING THE EVENT DONT READ MY POST.

Saw the Insidious 3 Into the Further Haunted House this weekend at Fan Expo in Dallas. It's actually pretty cool but I feel we're in no danger of it replacing or endangering the haunted house experience. The throughput for this type of event is very slow and the experience is one at a time. I can see this technology being used as an up charge side attraction but not replacing main attractions. I don't want to ruin it for anyone that may be going to see it but it's part traditional walk thru, part virtual reality 4D sitting down with a headset on. Clever idea using the physical environment around you and then blending it almost seem less when you put the virtual reality set on. It's a full 360 environment while in 4D with accompanying effects happening as they tell a short story into the new movie. Clever design as well. It's two semi trailers linked together with what I think is two, maybe three rooms with the Oculus Rift set up. They snap a picture of you at some point and offer you the ability to upload it to social media right after you exit via two iPads. They also email it to you. All in all it's fun, with the throughput being as slow as it is the wait for maybe even 50 people can be as much as 1-2 hrs. If you reserved a ticket through their site I highly recommend checking it out.

The Insidious Experience is another fine job done by DeadHouseDesigns and I was actually fortunate to be able to work on it with them and I don't think it will replace haunted houses ....but it will be a new experience like Larry said that you will start finding in your local strip malls just like the escape games.

                      Rift Experience -

We had a booth at a local Comicon last weekend and I had our Oculus Rift set up allowing people to try a couple of the Horror demos I had available - We had quite a crowd gathered to test it out all weekend. I will definitely not replace haunts, even when they start doing the 3D Mapped Virtual/Real use such as "The Void" but it definitely got people gathered around our booth - which led to people asking about the Haunted Attractions we do, so it was a good marketing tool - especially with some of the reactions we got from people using it. We had a few people scream loud enough to be heard at the back of the comicon floor

It's a fantastic marketing tool for sure. There was a large line all weekend here in Dallas and no shortage of screams and terrified patrons waiting to go in. No doubt it worked in their favor as i heard many saying they couldn't wait to see the movie after exiting the attraction. Well done concept

I think it's cool--but in no danger of replacing or even touching us.

Holodecks. That's what'll get us. But not immersive TV.

No matter how good it is the scares simply aren't there--it's movie scared, not 'ohmygodthathingcanreallygetme' scared.

                          So we're safe.

Jack - I agree it doesn't have a chance right now to replace the physical haunted house - But trust me it's a lot scarier than you think, I really wish I had video from some of the grown men we had at out booth trying it out - We had a couple that not only screamed and tried ducking out the the way, but also frantically tried to get the Oculus off their face to escape the creature. I would say it is definitely scarier than a "Movie Scare" - If your inside the rift for more than a few minutes you quickly get immersed because its full 3D....and you can look anywhere you want just like in real life....something you can't do with a horror movie.

We had so many people try it out and their first impression before putting it on was "How scary can it be...it's a video game" - by the end if they made it to the end they were usually along the lines of "Holy crap that was so real....way different than I imagined"

So yes in the end....maybe not quite as scary as real life scares.....but FAR scarier than movie scares because yes once your immersed you do believe that thing coming toward you can get you
