Do you have armed Security? I think this could be one of the best topics for seminars at Transworld. And truthfully, I think it should be offered more than one year. Hopefully you never have to deal with a maniac taking shots at cars on the expressway leading to your haunt and police choppers buzzing overhead for weeks on end looking for the guy. Cars getting stopped a couple miles away at checkpoints matching vehicles description etc. Or have the moment you find yourself maneuvering because your parking attendant at the gate just radioed you "Car matching description - single male by himself ignored me and parked at far end away from everyone". But I advise being prepared...and being prepared the right way.

You got a pile o-cash sitting there at night. And haunts out in the sticks are just as likely if not more so to need security.

      Exactly something to look at

"I've had unofficial conversations with my parking staff who are also first responders. They said they all have conceal carry licenses. We also always have a off duty officer in uniform." - ( mrfoos post from above )

What is the employers legal liability in that situation? I don't have the answer! Just another one of those things we make mental note of "I need to find out' but never get it done.

        Probably complete.

I would never have armed guards. If they want the money, give it to them. Dirt cheap compared to the lawsuit if your guard shoots someone. Even more so if that person isn't committing an armed robbery.

I look around as I go out and have noticed that the security guards at most places are actually professionally trained 911 dialers. The businesses employing the guards don't want them dealing with problems. If it's serious enough, let the police handle it.

Your insurance company will also have an opinion, so check with them.

          Exactly.

If you think that only police officers can correctly handle a firearm, then hire off-duty police officers for security.

You have a duty for the safety of your staff and your patrons. A lot can happen while you're waiting around for a response to your 911 call.

And when you do call 911; you're calling because you want a good guy with a gun to show up. Doesn't it make sense to have a good guy with a gun already there?

But; the money there does make it more of a reason why you might have to defend your customers life. Armed robberies do not happen; where there is no reason for it not to happen.

              As to calling 911...

Where I am; closest police are usually 20 minutes away. Ah...country livin'......where daylight break-ins occur because of that fact. Why my creek was used to dump jewelry boxes taken from a house 2 miles away; why several neighbors have been hit in last several years.

Waiting for police is not an option here. In fact; police told me to carry.

Mark we have several cops that carry and few others but I only carry before opening (cash coming in) and at the end of the night when cash is going out. We run a armed escort for our ticket both all the way to the night deposit box and they do not drive the same way every night. I have not seen nor heard of a need for someone to use force at a haunt in a long while and they would be a fool at ours. We run 10 security guards most are police or first responders and they are accustom to handling issues like this with out panicking. People must be qualified to do the job or accidents will happen.

The best thing to do, is hire off duty police officers. The liability falls 100% on employers.

As far as I can tell, there are almost no insurance companies that will cover your event if you have armed security. That being said, I have been licensed to carry for many years and never leave home without my sidearm. Most of my security were also licensed to carry. I always told them with a wink not to carry when on duty at the haunt. I mean, what I don't know won't kill me right!

I guess what I'm saying is that if you feel more comfortable with your security having their legally owned and permitted to carry hand gun, then do it. Just don't inform your insurance company. Also, know that if there is a situation that occurs where a weapon is used, You will be responsible for any legal ramifications not your insurance co. To me, I always felt is was worth the risk to protect my employees and customers.

I think you are 110% correct great topic for a seminar and I can't believe no one has thought of it so far. But to answer your question yes we have armed security at our facility. At peak nights at Creepyworld for example we'll have up to 8 to 10 sheriff officers working for us. We let them totally take care of security we don't deal with anything. We give them the rights to remove people from the property if they deem it necessary. In other words the police say someone has to go we never intervene. We simply tell them that the police made the decision not us and there is nothing we can do.

Have the police come to your attraction in their police cars that helps as well.

When you show up to Creepyworld for example there are 10 police cars parked everywhere. I think most of the customers know don't mess around here.

We have an armed uniformed police officer at the entrance to the haunt nightly. He’s told not to let anyone intoxicated into the haunt. He uses his judgement as a police officer if someone has had too much to drink. He politely informs them they appear to have had too much to drink and to return on another night. He probably turns away 3 to 10 people a night, but I’d rather not deal with their destructive behavior in the haunt. He’s also a deterrent for trouble makers. They know he is there if our internal security team have a problem with a disorderly customer.

We also have camera’s located throughout the building and in the parking lot. Our security monitor sometimes sends him out to the parking lot if they see anyone walking around the parked cars. So far (knocking on wood) we’ve had no cars broken into or customers robbed or harassed in our parking lot in 6 years of operation. We’ve only had to call for his assistance a couple times a season to escort someone out of the haunt. I really think if helps having him there. He also rides with us when we make bank deposits. He costs us about $170 a night. Well worth it!!!
