  • Could this be the beginning of the end?

    http://abc7.com/1530097/

A popular Halloween attraction at Knott's Berry Farm and California's Great America was shutting down, officials announced Wednesday, after some took to social media calling the display "offensive" to those suffering from mental illness.

The virtual reality attraction, which essentially focuses on a story line about a possessed patient running wild in a hospital, consists of strapping parkgoers into a chair before they are given VR goggles. If the game becomes too intense for them, customers can press the "panic button."

Mental health advocates speaking out included Rob Thomas, the father of homeless man Kelly Thomas, who had schizophrenia and died in a violent confrontation with Fullerton police in 2011.

Rob Thomas said the attraction stigmatized mental illness.

"You get in there and get the virtual reality set on, you know you're in an insane asylum, and that this Katie, this patient, is loose and is going to do bad things to you. It's wrong," he said. "The mentally ill are people. They're human beings. They're suffering. They have illnesses, and we have to do something to help them - not demonize them. Not to continue the stigma of mental illness."

Asylums are a staple of this industry. Will people start targeting smaller haunts next?

Yes, people will start targeting similar events next.

Why? Because it worked this time. And it worked this time because it has worked in the past.

Political Correctness has taken taken over our country and, to a lesser extent, the world.

Capitulating to PC and social justice warriors just to avoid the bad press is just like negotiating with terrorists and kidnappers; doing so only ensures that they will continue to attack others in the future, expecting similar results.

Sure, some haunted house displays could surely be judged by a majority of people as "crossing the line". This is not one of those cases. This is a case of a PC warrior, with an opinion very much in the minority, making enough noise that it's easier for the event to just give up.

I'm not big and rich enough to be targeted as being controversial, but when I get to that point, I hope I'll have the courage to tell the PC police to take a hike.

The shame needs to be aimed right back at them.

This is just a large corporation caving in to avoid controversy. Cedar Fair in this case.

Similar thing happened five years ago at Cedar Point.

They have a VERY broad audience they need to cater to.

        I wouldn't be to worried.

I read this an instantly got concerned. This topic was covered on an episode of haunt talk radio. If one of the major companies folds to some pressure from a few offended people, how can we expect a mom and pop hunt to stand up to these people? This shouldn't be a politically correct issue, it's clearly set in a fantasy world! It's ridiculous! From here out out this company doesn't get a dime of my money, as that's the only way to truly show these companies that our values no longer line up.

Sickening! I seriously doubt the people complaining are really this company's target demographic in the first place!

I'm not worried until I see the Haunted Mansion at Disney World remove the host who hung himself over the crowd. Most people know someone who killed themselves. I don't think Disney is worried about offending people... and THEY'RE Disney.

Didn't Disney have to tone down their Pirates of the Caribbean display, bowing to PC pressure to stop the drunken pirates from chasing female villagers?

If you ask me this is ridiculous they should have stuck to their guns on this and told them to screw off... you know I would have!!!!

This would only make people want to see it even more than before!
