Tentacles

I found a how to site once that showed how to make tentacles that move.

disks that are spaced and tied that as you pull one cable on one side it would pull the tentacle to one side. Anyone have any kind of link or idea where I can find that again?

The first pic on the opening page is a short video, and then the next four pics show how it was made. If you go to the 2nd page and scroll down to the 2nd to the last picture, there is a video of a prop I built two years ago that uses eight of the tentacles from one low RPM motor. The largest thing I've done with them so far is to make the last 8' of a 20 something snake curl. The diameter of the largest disc for the snake was 10", and then tapered down to 1" over the eight foot length.

One question. How did you do it so that the seperation disks don't slide together. Did you put a spacer tube with the center cable or did you glue each one to the center piece?

How did you do the face coming out of the TV? Actually, what I want to know is what did you use for the screen? The rest would be easy to do.

Spandex stretched over a frame that fastens inside the gutted TV cabinet.

I believe Dan Faupel sells a re-enforced Spandex material that is extremely durable. Haunted Visions.com

I love working with Spandex. We've used it for years as part of our queue line wall with great results. And if you liked the 3D TV, you will probably like this one too:

I had a tentacle coming out of a small hole in the wall of the wine cellar, I still have it on video , a kid wrestled with it and broke it after it it's first three years.
This was probably THE last place and the last thing that anyone ever expected to see coming out of that small hole in a completely underground room made of stone.
The mechanism was constructed inside a 6inch diameter pvc pipe then slid down into place.
I would have a volunteer standing a few feet away from the wall-hole, looking away from it, and if someone had earlier looked into the hole it looked like a 2 foot deep , dead-end hole but it had no ceiling! Up it went (it was a vent chimney measuring 11 by 11 inches)
The tentacle would silently slide down into the hole , then turn horizontally, enter the room, curve upwards about 3 feet and slap a manacle hanging from the wall, "Ching-a ching!" It makes the metal slap the stone, they turn and scream! Great FUN!
The tentacle itself was covered with black vynl with little round suckers all over it's bottom surface. Pretty scary sight in such a dimly lit room, moving like that, so close.

that sounds fantastic! I'd love to see the video. i'm trying to make a costume alligator tail tha will move realisticaly.
