    Use a stepper motor system,
Or put the motor on most any event timer hooked with an industrial hockey puck relay.
Inductive Motors have high start up amperage so a large motor can blow a 10 amp relay. You want a 20 amp relay to handle the start up current.

Maybe begining with a garage door opener would be the easiest?
They have the travel-limiting adjustable feature and they come with a remote control!
Maybe a motion switch wired to a relay too? Set the Mo. Switch on it's short 3 second setting.
I met a guy who stacked two garage door tracks up inside a brick chimney and made a Dumbwaiter for a fancy restaurant. Forward and reverse and safety stopping controls all come in the one package. I recomend against using the really old garage door openers that have a screw gear and no safety reverse. One such device crushed a child to death 20 miles north of here.

Very true! If you wanted a certain limo's motor to STOP in the middle of the train crossing this would take a special Oui-Ja board.
(Don't forget to set up the video cameras!)
